A rambutan tree has broad foliage and many branches. In the southern provinces, the tree yields fruit at the beginning of the rainy season . The chom chom fruit season lasts until the end of the rainy season (from May to October).

During the rambutan season one can notice the typical bright red colour of rambutan fruit stands located in the markets, along road and at intersections throughout the southern provinces.

Mangosteen (mang cut)
=================================
The name and the shape of this fruit does not look attractive to those who first see it. The fruit is a bit smaller than a tennis ball and has a dark violet rough skin. When you peel off the upper part of the fruit with a small sharp knife, you can see the transparent white pulp inside arranged in equal segments. While lifting each segment of the transparent white meat to your mouth you can imagine the light and pure refreshment that leaves a little sour taste lingering in your mouth.

Star Apple (vu sua)

No better word than marvelous can be used to praise the tropical fruit with the name Vu Sua (milk from the breast). Upon entering a star apple orchard, the most famous located in Can Tho Province in the Mekong River Delta, visitors can see for themselves the hundreds of star apples suspended from the branches. The round smooth fruit are all of equal size. The shape of the star apple matches the name attached to it, as does its juice which is fragrantly sweet and milky white like breast milk.
If visitors are unfamiliar to the region, they can be guided by locals on how to enjoy the fruit. A novice will certainly peel the fruit with a sharp knife, which may cause the precious juice inside to be wasted. When using a knife to cut the fruit, it is advisable to cut the fruit into two parts before using a spoon to scoop out the pulp, bit by bit, until nothing is left.
The most popular way to enjoy the fruit by orchard owners is to eat the whole fruit. People tend to drill a small hole at the top of the fruit, lift it to their mouths, lean their heads backward, and drink the flow of the fragrant juice as a baby sucks milk from its mother's breast. One thing you should remember before taking in the juice is that you must squeeze the tough fruit until it becomes tender so that the juice mixes with the meat of the fruit to become a sweet and fragrant muddy substance that looks like breast milk.

Durian (Sau Rieng)

You may wonder why this fruit has to bear such an austere name as "sau rieng" (one's own sorrows). If you are curious enough, travel to the orchard province in southern Vietnam where the locals are likely to recite the immortal love story.
Long ago, there was a young couple that lived in the region. Because of social prejudices that could not be overcome, the couple sought their own deaths in order to be faithful to each other. Their own sorrows received the population's sympathies, and the story of their tragedy has been handed down from generation to generation. To commemorate the couple, the locals have named one of their most valuable fruits sau rieng.
Durian is an expensive fruit. One Durian fruit is five to six times larger than a Mango. Its skin is thick, rough, and covered with sharp thorns. With a gentle cut between the edges of the outer shell, you can easily open the fruit to expose the layers of bright yellow segments of meat that make the pulp look like it is covered with a thin layer of butter.
Literature writer Mai Van Tao once wrote about the particularly good smell of the Durian. He wrote, "The dense fragrance which spreads near and far, lingers a long time before disappearing. The strong smell can go straight to your nostrils, even though you are still several meters away from the fruit. The fragrance of Durian is a mixture of smells which come from a ripening jackfruit and that of a shaddock. It can also be compared to the strong smell of foreign-made cheese and is rich as a hen's egg. Others describe the fruit as sweet as well-kept honey. All things considered, Durian has a special tempting smell.Those who have not enjoyed the fruit before may find it hard to eat. But once they have tried it, they are likely to seek it again."

Pineapple plants are widely grown in the country. The peak ripening time for this tropical fruit coincides with summer when the hours of sunshine are longer. People in southern Vietnam usually call this tropical fruit trai thom (fragrant fruit), which is literally a precise quote for the fruit since anyone who takes their first bite can surely notice the strong sweet smell. Since the smell of the pineapples lingers longer than that of some other fruits, connoisseurs find it difficult to forget.
Pineapples are processed into different products such as canned pineapple, pineapple liquor, sweet preserved pineapple liquor, and sweet preserved pineapple. There is also a special juicy drink that exists only in pineapple growing areas. Growers press the fruit into a juice which is then mixed with the yoke of a hen's egg before being thoroughly stirred together to become a muddy drink. The drink is said to be very sweet, creamy, and nutritious.

Longan (Nhan)
============================
Longan trees are grown in larger numbers in the northern provinces than in the southern region. The most famous Longan comes from former Hung Yen province. In the old days, Hung Yen Longans were among the food items reserved as tributes to the Kings.
The fruit is as small as the tip of a thumb. Inside the thin and light brown skin is the transparent white pulp which covers a small glossy black seed. The thicker the pulp, the juicier, more fragrant, and crisp the pulp.
Longan is a protein rich fruit. It is usually used as a main ingredient, along with lotus seeds, to make sweet soup, which is considered a very good summer refreshment. The seedless longan, when dried, is also a very fine choice for connoisseurs.

Thieu Litchi (Vai Thieu)
=================================
Thieu is the name dedicated to a special kind of litchi grown in Hai Duong Province. The Thieu Litchi is a bit bigger than the longan. Unlike the skin of the longan, which is rather smooth, the dark red skin of the litchi is rough and rippled.The meat of the litchi is also transparent white, but it is thicker and juicier than that of a longan. The litchi seed is also smaller than the longan seed.

Banana (Chuoi)

Bananas offer various mineral substances and energy. Bananas are not only a delicious fruit when ripe, but green bananas are also part of some dishes. Banana flower is mixed in delicious salads. Papaya is sold all year round, especially in the south, and is not very expensive. It has a sweet smell and offers various minerals and vitamins, such as vitamin A and C.
In the south, one of the popular varieties of papaya is the one with red, thick pulp that has a fragrance but that does not contain much sugar. This species is grown in the Mekong Delta region and in the area close to the Cambodian border. Another species of papaya available in the south is the one with yellow or orange peel.
Papayas are not as abundant in the north. Because of the colder climate, fruits take a longer time to ripen.

Sapodilla (Hong Xiem)

Sapodilla was imported to Vietnam a long time ago. In the last 20 years, sapodilla has been widely planted in the north, where it grew for the first time in Xuan Dinh, Tu Liem district, Hanoi.
Sapodilla fruit is shaped like an egg and weighs from 10 to 200 grams. Its peel is brown with tiny cracks near the stalk. The pulp, which is brown and yellow, is very juicy and smells very sweet. When it is not ripe, it is not edible because it contains a lot of sticky resin.
There are two popular species of sapodilla grown in Vietnam: orange pulp and white-yellow pulp sapodilla. The orange pulp sapodilla is planted in the north on the highlands. The pulp of the white-yellow sapodilla is light yellow or yellow and the peel is green or yellow. The peel is thin; the pulp is soft and has taste of peach, banana, and apple.

Xiem custard apples are oval or heart shaped. Their peel is green with thorns, which turn black when the fruit is ripe. The fruits are generally big and can reach 1.5 kg. The pulp is white, hard, and a bit sour.
Custard apple trees deliver fruit after three or four years of growth. A tree produces on average from 50 to 100 fruits per year. The fruits ripens on the tree and then cracks, especially during the rainy season.

Jackfruit (Mit)

Jackfruits contain a lot of sugar and calories. They grow on every part of the tree: the trunk, branches, and even on the roots.
Jackfruit trees bear approximately 150 to 200 fruits per year. When the fruit are ripe, their pulp is yellow and sweet, containing a lot or little juice depending on the species. Jackfruits without seeds are planted densely in the Mekong Delta region.
To nu jackfruits are small and come from a short tree. The flesh of ripe fruit is firmly stuck to the core; when eating a jackfruit, simply hold the core and pull it out. In the south, the to nu jackfruit harvest season starts from March to June. There are several other species of jackfruits divided into two main groups: hard jackfruits with hard and crunchy flesh, and soft jackfruits with soft flesh and a lot of juice.

Talking about fruits..how many of you have tried fruits in Vietnam and which fruits? I already tried all the fruits except thieu litchi in HCMC. Sapodilla (Hong Xiem) is also known as chiku. In my opinion, these fruits in Vietnam taste very good and delicious.

I absolutely love the fruits in Vietnam...they are very tasty. Some nights I just eat fruits as dinner, believe me, they are delicious. I agree the fruits are good, better than those from Malaysia or even Thailand.

Just to pre-emp Naemlo, I really mean "fruits" as in trái cây. Not the "mangoes" or "papayas" or "oysters".:D

Yes...me too....eat fruits for lunch and skip lunch...kekeke...still prefer the water melon and pineapple. I can eat the whole water melon which is small long and round in shape :)

Her first CD single "The Student Guitar", became an instant success due to its appeal to My Tam’s original audience, students in their 20s. The biggest hit from this album, "Love Dream", received massive airplay on radio and TV. The song, "Sing for you to stay back/ Hat cho nguoi o lai", was also another hit for Mỹ Tâm.

In the middle of 2003, she released her third studio album, Yesterday and Now. And it became a huge record, becoming the most successful album in her musical career and Vietnamese musical history to date. Following her third album, My Tam quickly released her first VCD album Love Forever.

Knowing that her chance was coming, My Tam came up with the idea about a concert in two big stadiums in Vietnam. She became the first Vietnamese artist to sell out a stadium concert. The total expenditure for the two concerts was about 30 billion dong (approximately $2.5 million in 2003) and is the most expensive concert in Vietnamese music history. She was crowned: "No. 1 Pop Star in Vietnam" and "The Queen of V-Pop". After these concerts, her third album sold more than 100,000 copies, which made it the highest-selling album in the Vietnamese recording industry. The album is still in print due to popular demand from new fans.

Later in 2004, she was the only Vietnamese singer who participated in the Asia Song Festival in Seoul, Korea. This festival is one of the most prominent international music festivals in Asia. She wowed the Korean crowds with her 2 hits: "Wish" and "Oh First Kiss". My Tam explained that through the title The Return, she wants to express that the album is her return to "pop ballad and slow-jams" and "emotional feelings." The new album has a similar sound to her third album, except it is more influenced by Korean music. Vietnamese critics have brought acclaim to The Return, stating that it has brought My Tam to a new level in her career: a more professional voice, significantly improved English, and more skillful singing techniques. Even though Vietnamese producers produced a majority of the album, it contains a more international vibe, excellent quality, and characterizes My Tam as an evolving artist. Following the album release, a tour is planned during the 2008 summer.

On September 1, 2008, she released her seventh album, To the Beat (Nhip Dap). Accompanied with the release was a live concert tour to promote the album and her previous successful album The Return (Tro Lai). To the Beat was produced by the same producer who worked on her last album, The Return.

On September 7, 2008, the concert tour kicked off in Tao Dan stadium, Ho Chi Minh City. The official name of the tour is "Multi-frequency Sound Wave", which means a sound wave that can go anywhere so that everyone can hear and enjoy it, no matter whether you are rich or poor, or living in urban or rural areas. In addition, 204 internet cafes in 17 districts were within 200 metres of schools, which is now prohibited under Vietnamese law.

In their defence, Pham Quoc Ban, the department's director, said many of these cafes had opened before the current law was promulgated.

That said, internet access would be denied to these outlets at the end of the week, Ban said.

In addition, the department has ordered internet service providers (ISPs) to block Web access to every internet cafe from 11pm to 6am.

In HCM City, authorities have asked ISPs to block access to online games such as Dot kich (Crossfire), which is considered excessively violent, and pornographic sites.

Earlier this week, HCM City's Department of Information and Communications ordered HCM City Telecommunications, VDC 2, Viettel, FPT Telecom, Sai Gon Postel, and EVN Telecom in HCM City to deny access to these sites.

Crossfire is produced by VTC, a multimedia corporation that is in fact managed by the Ministry of Information and Communications.

The department has told ISPs to report the results of their shutdown by September 1. If their efforts are found to be insufficient, they will be subject to fines.

The department also said it would clamp down on advertising of online games in the city's 24 districts.

A number of other online games have also been outlawed. Details will be sent to the seven ISPs in the next few days.

Earlier, FPT Online, which produces Dac nhiem anh hung (A Heroic Mission), announced that it would withdraw the game in April.

According to Le Manh Ha, director of the city's Department of Information and Communications, other game providers had been asked to voluntarily withdraw access to excessively violent or pornographic material.

Vietnam in top ten countries affected by natural calamities

VietNamNet Bridge – Southeast Asia is considered as the world’s storm center and Vietnam is among the top ten countries most affected by natural calamities and climate change.

As many as 60 experts from 20 Asian countries and the United Nations met in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue on August 25 to evaluate the impact of natural disasters in the region.

According to the conference, natural calamities in Asia account for nearly 40 percent of global losses caused by natural calamities; this continent accounts for nearly 60 percent. Southeast Asia is the storm center and one of the regions most hit by natural disasters and most vulnerable to climate change. Vietnam is one of ten countries most affected.

Representatives from the World Meteorology Organisation revealed that the agglomeration of carbon dioxide and substances that creates the greenhouse effect has reached its highest level so far. The result is climate change and the increase in number and intensity of storms in the world. The clearest evidence is the drought for two consecutive years in 2009-2010 in Australia, Vietnam and Africa, ice-melting in the two poles, and floods and landslides in China and Pakistan.

A professor of social anthropology noted that Vietnam doesn’t have earthquakes, but complex storms and floods force Vietnam to have long-term strategies on urban and land planning. Research presented at this conference showed that, in India, more modern houses collapsed in earthquakes than houses built by traditional techniques and designs. This is why countries need to share their experience and knowledge to confront natural disasters.

Neil R. Britton, a senior expert on natural disaster risk management from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), remarked that his bank has given top priority to natural disaster control programs and is ready to cooperate with social and non-government organisations.

From 1987 to 2009, ADB disbursed over $9.6 billion in aid to Asian countries to cope with natural disasters, including 19 percent in relief aid, 45 percent in control programs and 36 percent in resettlement. The biggest development bank in Asia has funded 11 relevant projects worth over $ 428 million for Vietnam during this period.

The three-day workshop co-sponsored by Hue Economic University, the University of Delhi, India, and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters, Belgium, is part of the Microdis project, short for “micro-analysis of disasters.”

The project aims to strengthen prevention, mitigation and preparedness strategies to reduce the impact of natural disasters on health, social and economic developments in Asia.

VietNamNet Bridge – American journalist Stanley Karnow recalled his memories of General Vo Nguyen Giap on Tuoi Tre Daily on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the legendary general (25-8-1911-25-8-2010).

Karnow had the chance at an exclusive interview with General Giap, posted to New York Times Magazine in June 1990 entitled "Giap Remembers.”

Karnow couldn’t forget the day he sat in an old-styled room in Hanoi and listened to General Giap, the legendary man, talking about the miraculous victory of his country.

When did you first interview General Vo Nguyen Giap?

The first time I saw him was in 1990. We met in an old house in Hanoi, near my hotel. We talked and then I visited his home. I met his wife and some members of his family.

After this trip, I wrote a New York Times article about him and used it in my book later. I researched the wars in Vietnam and Giap’s role when he became a leader of the Viet Minh… Giap and I talked with each other and we interviewed in French because he is very proficient in the language.

Do you know why General Giap agreed to be interviewed by you, an American, when Vietnam had just opened its door to the world?

I think perhaps he had read my book, Vietnam: A History, so he agreed to talk with me. He told me about Dien Bien Phu by moving tea-sets on the table.

The interview with General Giap was an important landmark in my career.

Is there any change in your view of the Vietnam War after your talk with General Giap?

I really think that Americans were wrong when they carried out the Vietnam War. The US didn’t have any opportunity to win and that is the topic of my book. Looking back I see this war is a tragedy. Around 60,000 American died and went missing. So many Vietnamese died. So many Vietnamese families lost their relatives and were affected by Agent Orange.

In any circumstance, General Giap was very determined. And when I asked him: “Can you help me understand why there was no chance for American to win this war?” He answered: “Because we were always consistent and ready to struggle to overcome every circumstance.”

Did he tell you about the price that Vietnam had to pay in the war?

He told me about cemeteries of war martyrs and the white tombstones. Many cemeteries have white tombs that don’t contain the remains of anyone. These are artificial tombs of soldiers who died in southern Vietnam, but their remains were lost. We could understand that there are always heart-breaking sacrifices in wars.

General Giap never told me about the specific number of Vietnamese who died in the war. He always repeated that it was a great loss. But he said there were people who had to sacrifice to win in that war. I listened to him and I understand very clearly.

I don’t judge him about it. I was a soldier in World War II, when I was only 18, 19 years old. I reported the war in Algeria. I observed many wars in my life to understand that the number of people who had to die for wars is terrible.

Why did you write about General Giap as the person who is on a par with Grant, Lee, Rommel and MacArthur in the temple honoring world military leaders?

I wrote about many general in my book and made comparisons with him. He told me how he faced the French since 1946. When Giap told me about French General Jean de Lattre de Tassigny in Vietnam, he was very proud to face him in the war. He made me remember the other great generals in history.

When he led the Dien Bien Phu campaign, foreign advisors were always besides him. They told him to do this, do that. General Giap said he always listened to what they said and didn’t sleep at night to make decisions.

He commanded soldiers to dig into the earth to move into the centre. The French could never imagine that General Giap could bring cannons to hill tops and then triumph with the least losses. That was one of the most special victories in his life. That’s why I compared him and his historic battle to other famous generals.

What was your impression of General Giap?

He is a courteous and a little humorous in talks. He is very intelligent and urbane in a French style. On this occasion, I would like to convey my and my daughter Catherine’s happy birthday wish to him.

General Vo Nguyen Giap was the first general of the Vietnam People’s Army and the top commander in the two wars against the French colonialists (1946-1954) and the US imperialists (1960-1975).

The veteran revolutionary was the Vietnam People’s Army’s Commander in Chief for 30 years and an excellent disciple of President Ho Chi Minh.

A great military strategist and tactician, he was closely associated with the historic defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phu on May 7,1954.

Under Giap’s command, libration forces captured Sai Gon, now Ho Chi Minh City, on April 30, 1975.

In the 1990s, when Hai began serving the General, his health was very good. The General used to get up early to do morning exercises and have breakfast with his family before working at his office.

Even though he was over 80 years old, he worked very hard. The General’s doctor advised him on many occasions to not work so hard. In 1990-1991, General Giap worked until midnight to write his memoirs and to prepare documents for the seminar on President Ho Chi Minh’s 100th birthday.

Working for the General since he was 21 years old, Major Le Van Hai clearly understands General Giap’s careful style of work. For example, even though speeches and documents had already been brought to publishing houses, General Giap still needed to correct some sentences.

According to Hai, General Giap used his assistants very efficiently and effectively. Each of them was assigned a certain field to cover. He also asked for information from officials of various ministries and agencies. He used various sources of information at work.

Though he has been working for General Giap for more than 20 years, Major Hai said that he is not the most senior assistant. Colonel Nguyen Huyen and Major Trinh Nguyen Huan have been working for General Giap since the mid-1970s. The “youngest” assistant has served the General for nearly ten years.

All the assistants said they serve the General with great pleasure, although their responsibility is great.

In the late days of August, the General’s house at 30 Hoang Dieu was always crowded with guests who came to congratulate him on his 100th birthday. Flowers and keepsakes were placed everywhere. Though General Giap is now in Army Hospital 108, guests still came to see his wife.

According to Major Hai, the General is still in full possession of his senses. “When the Party Secretary General paid a visit on August 23 or when the Hanoi Party Secretary came on August 24, the General said thank you. In recent days, when I came to make reports, he immediately expressed his consent or not,” Hai said.

He said that General Giap’s birthdays were always simple and cozy. Assistants didn’t organize birthday celebrations but were prepared to welcome guests.

“Moments with [General Giap] were extremely valuable times in my life. I’m so lucky to have had access to a great man, a great personality, a person who has met the fullest character of Vietnam,” said Colonel Tran Hong, who has taken photos of General Giap since 1994.

On August 24 Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong, Minister of Defense Phung Quang Thanh, Hanoi Party Secretary Pham Quang Nghi, and many top officials visited the General at Hanoi-based Army Hospital 108.

The Prime Minister wished General Giap a long, healthy life and for his continued contribution of valuable opinions to the country’s development. He said the government always remembers and appreciates the General’s great contributions to the country.

Nghi presented the General a special gift – the Thang Long Dragon, numbered 100, which is one of 1,000 gemstone-inlaid dragons for the capital city’s 1,000th birthday.

Also on August 24, many representatives of social organizations paid a visit to General Giap’s house.

AVG looked at the number of Internet attacks worldwide for the final week of July 2010, as well as the number of AVG installations per country. Live shows: making and burning money

VietNamNet Bridge – While foreign singers organize live shows to earn money, Vietnamese singers hold live shows to “burn” money!

Surveying the boom in live shows and overseas tours of world music stars, Andy Cirzan, deputy director of Chicago & Jam Production (USA), told Rolling Stone magazine that singers are earning money through live shows and tours because of the steep drop-off in recorded music sales.

The Spice Girls reunion in 2008 earned about GBP16.5 million after 11 shows at the O2 Stadium in London. The Police earned GBP7.2 million after two live shows at the State de France Stadium, GBP3.5 million from a show in Tokyo Dome Stadium, Japan and GBP2.9 million from Maracana Stadium in Brazil. Other stars like Beyonce and Eric Clapton also earned hefty sums from their tours.

It is different in Vietnam, where organizing live shows often means incurring heavy losses.

Diva Thanh Lam was the pioneer in organizing live shows. Her first live show, called “Give me a day,” took place at HCM City’s Lan Anh Stage in 1997, without any sponsors.

In 1998, diva My Linh had her first trans-Vietnam show named “My Linh’s Voice.” The show was a huge success, despite also not having sponsors. Two years later, she organized the second live show “My Linh and Brothers”. This time the show had a sponsor and earned a small profit. Four years later, My Linh’s 2006 tour was praised for its quality but the singer suffered losses of nearly 300 million dong, despite the show being sponsored by Samsung and tickets selling out. My Linh explained that she incurred losses because of big investments in technical equipment and expertise. She paid $10,000 a night for Japanese audio experts. She said she organized the shows to satisfy her artistic passion.

In March 2007, pop star Lam Truong launched his “Yesterday” live show at the Military Zone 7 Sports House in HCM City and incurred heavy financial losses. Since then, almost all singers have reported losses when they organize live shows.

Why?

“Live shows” in this article mean shows where music stars meet certain technical standards for stage, sound, and light quality, not just shows held every night at bars or clubs in Hanoi and HCM City. These kinds of shows are almost always profitable.

If singers are not “stars”, they can’t expect to draw audiences to their live shows. Show organizers would never accept offers to organize these shows. However, some unknown singers consider live shows a shortcut to fame. Singer Lam Chi Khanh is a typical example. He sold his house to hold two live shows, in which tickets were delivered free.

But why are real stars like Thanh Lam, My Linh, My Tam, Phuong Thanh, Dan Truong, and Lam Truong still losing money from live shows?

If international stars organize tours of concerts, Vietnamese stars only hold a single show. Vietnam currently doesn’t have any theaters for big shows while stadiums are large but still only appropriate for sports events. Only Hanoi and HCM City have several theaters that are good enough for small shows, such as the Hanoi Opera House, Hoa Binh Theatre, Lan An Stage, etc.

As a result, singers have to hire modern light and audio systems in order to organize live shows. My Linh even hired Japanese audio experts. Will audiences dare pay more for shows that are organized on unprofessional stages?

These stages increase expenditures for live shows while security remains low. Two live shows by pop star Phuong Thanh were unsuccessful because of rain. My Tam’s live show was also affected by rain.

Moreover, it is a waste to build a modern stage for only one show.

However, the more profound reason is that Vietnam doesn’t have a real music market. This market is affected by free shows organized by television broadcasters. Also, singers can only sell tickets worth a few US dollars in Hanoi and HCM City.

What’s the future for live shows?

Vietnamese singers have learned not to organize big live shows and instead focus on smaller ones. Hong Nhung and Quang Dung were very successfully with a small live show for a hundred audience members at a club in HCM City. The tickets for this live show were priced up to $150, a record in Vietnam.

Pop star Dam Vinh Hung organized a similar show named “White Night Party.” He even brought this show to the US, selling tickets at $100.

MFC company also organized small live shows for overseas Vietnamese star Tuan Ngoc at Sofitel Saigon Hotel. Other overseas Vietnamese singers did the same at some nightclubs in HCM City.

Some singers organized shows at small theaters to cut costs, while still managing to attract larger audiences than those typically seen at nightclubs. Thanh Thao, Phi Nhung, Huong, and Lan May Trang band followed this policy and managed to earn profits.

Big live shows are now only organized if singers have big sponsors.

Study abroad is not a cure-all for self-indulgent rich kids

VietNamNet Bridge – One student squandered $100,000 on gambling, another had to quit school and return to Vietnam because he was pickpocketed, and a third found that she could not study while she is pregnant. For quite a few Vietnamese students, reports VietNamNet, studying abroad proves to be a bad choice.

The Gambler. Many Vietnamese students are traumatized when they fail the university entrance exams. However, failure was excellent news for Nguyen Van Duc in HCM City, because this meant that he could go abroad to study.

He was really happy when his parents said they’d send him to study at an Australian university. Duc had tired of the flesh-pots in HCM City. He’d dreamed of going abroad where he believed he could enjoy relax and enjoy life supported by regular money transfers from his parents

After just two months in Australia, Duc had squandered $100,000 on gambling. His father had to fly to Australia then to bring the boy back home.

Duc was desperate to go abroad again. Believing that their son had repented of his mistakes, his parents decided to send him to a school in Russia.

However, Duc had not changed. He asked parents for $1000 a month to pay the rent on a flat. In fact, he lived in a dorm and spent the money parents remitted in bars and discotheques.

As Duc spent more time on play than on studying, he could not finish the university program after several years in Russia. Finally, his parents forced him back home after they concluded that overseas study would not help Duc become a useful person.

The New Mother. Like Duc, Nguyen Huong Giang came from a wealthy family. After spending her freshman year at the University of Foreign Languages, Giang decided to go abroad to study, because that’s become a fashion in Vietnam.

In the UK, Giang did not live in a dormitory, but in a leased flat. She took a taxi, not public transportation, to school. Giang was really a connoisseur; she never bought Chinese-made clothes like other Vietnamese students, but only wore garments sporting famous logos.

While other Vietnamese students, studying abroad on State scholarships, spent only $150-200 a month on incidentals, Giang burned through an allowance of $600 each month.

Not surprisingly, many men paid attention to Giang. Unluckily, she became pregnant. Finding that she could not continue to study in such a situation, Giang had to return home to give birth out of wedlock. Now she does not have time to think of going abroad again.

The Thief. Much like Giang, Mai began university in Hanoi. She was not a very serious student – in fact, she became famous as a ‘playgirl.’ And also like Giang, Mai dreamed of studying abroad. With her parent’s help, she won a scholarship to study at a Japanese university.

As soon as Mai set foot in Japan, she indulged her passion for shopping and sightseeing.

Suddenly one day, Mai was sent back to Vietnam. She’d been expelled from her university after she was arrested for shoplifting at a fancy store. No one could understand why Mai stole the goods, because she seemed to have plenty of her own money.

Overseas study won’t fix a bad kid

Commenting on the surging popularity of study abroad, Nguyen Van Nguyen, a counselor at an ‘overseas study centre’ in HCM City, says many parents send their children abroad when they fail the university entrance exams. They have enough money to do so, and they think this is really a good solution.

Nguyen thinks parents should first learn more about their children. There’s no point in sending them abroad unless they are ready to study. If the kids are bent on self-indulgence, it will cost far less to support their bad habits in Hanoi or HCM City than in London, Sydney or Tokyo.

Such ads are posted on many websites. They are always accompanied with names, addresses, health reports, and information about the sperm sellers.

A Tien Phong newspaper reporter posed as an infertile man to buy sperm on a website. Just several hours later, he received dossiers on five sperm sellers, who all agreed to meet with him.

Nam, 27, introduced himself as a healthy man, 1.70m, with a healthy lifestyle from District 3, HCM City and was willing to sell sperm for 10 million dong ($500). He donated sperm three times already and all the receivers got pregnant.

Tu, 28, also from HCM City, wanted to donate sperm to women whose husbands are infertile or to single moms. However, he set conditions that sperm receivers must be less than 36, have good appearance and high incomes. Moreover, he would only donate sperms via direct sexual relations at hotels.

Nam revealed that he had sold sperm three times while sperm banks at HCM City hospitals like Tu Du or Hung Vuong only take sperm from a man once in his life. Nam admitted that he sold his sperm at private clinics on Ly Thuong Kiet road, District 10.

“I don’t know exactly how much it costs to take semen, but perhaps around 5 million dong/time,” Nam shrugged.

He had sold semen to a couple from Long An province for 12 million dong. They took the sperm at a hotel on Su Van Hanh road, District 1 and the couple brought it to a clinic to pump into the woman’s womb.

The Ministry of Health has banned the sperm trade in any form and sperm donation is only allowed at some big hospitals. However, Tu boasted that he knows some private consulting rooms that supply sperm-related services.

An official from the HCM City Department of Health acknowledged that it is difficult to detect illegal sperm collection and pumping services.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Ha from the HCM City Medicine University warned of the high risks for women who use such illegal services, since private consulting rooms don’t have standardized equipment and technology.

In addition, using semen from unknown people without being tested is dangerous. These people sell sperm to many people, creating the risk of marriages among children of the same fathers.

Tourists duped by funerary money

VietNamNet Bridge – Funerary money, fake bills burned in ancestor-worship ceremonies, now looks so real that dealers are using it to cheat tourists.

Police in Dong Xuan ward in Ha Noi’s Hoan Kiem District caught Le Van Quynh, from northern Hung Yen Province, who used funerary money last month to dupe an Australian tourist out of US$445 and VND5 million ($260).

Quynh approached the tourist in the Old Quarter and offered to show him around. Quynh then said he could exchange money at a higher rate than the banks. The tourist agreed and paid Quynh five hundred Australian dollars, for which Quynh gave him VND6 million in funerary bills.

At the police station, Quynh admitted that he had also cheated other tourists out of VND4 million ($210) using funerary bills in VND500,000 denominations.

Funerary money was once just thin paper printed with images of coins used in the past, but popular funerary notes are now have a rough likenesses to the real thing in colour and design, but include the words "Bank of Hell" on them.

The fake notes are usually packed with 60 notes in one set and sold for VND3,000 ($0.2) per set. They come in multiple denominations, from VND10,000 to VND500,000, but the most real-looking one is the VND50,000 note.

Tourists aren’t the only ones who’ve been confused with this money. Vietnamese people have been, too. Nguyen Thi Lanh from Dong Anh, a suburb of Ha Noi, said that some relatives came and put a set of VND500,000 on her ancestral altar. She thought that they were real so, after the relative left, she ran out and called after them to take them back.

Prime Minister’s Decision No 30/2003/QD-TTg on the protection of Vietnamese currency provides that "the act of copying Vietnamese notes for any purposes and without written agreement from the State Bank of Viet Nam is banned." But in practice the printing funerary money is done without any inspection from any government agencies. A Market Watch officer who asked to remain anonymous said that there were no decrees that specifically regulated the production of funerary notes.

Sept. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Vietnam’s economy may expand 6.7 percent this year, surpassing the original government target of 6.5 percent as domestic production restores growth momentum and global trade recovers.

The country’s economy continues to “develop in a positive direction,” unnamed government members said in a statement. With the “obvious economic recovery,” gross domestic product growth in the third and fourth quarters is expected to be higher than the first two quarters, according to the statement, which was filed on the government’s website.

The value of industrial production exceeded 504 trillion dong ($26 billion) in the Jan. to Aug. period, an increase of nearly 14 percent on-year. GDP growth in the third quarter may reach 7.18 percent, according to the statement.

Gross domestic product in the Southeast Asian nation expanded 6.4 percent in the second quarter, after advancing 5.8 percent in the first three months of the year. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said in June the economy may grow as much as 7 percent in 2010.

Euromonitor International sees continued expansion of the market, at around 5.6 per cent growth over the next few years, slightly behind Laos and Cambodia.

Viet Nam’s integration into the World Trade Organisation opened up more opportunities for investment and imports from foreign companies, particularly with the Government’s commitment to slash tax on imported beer, said Spiros Malandrakis, an analyst with Euromonitor International.

The country’s total beer sales experienced an significant increase of 56 per cent last year, topping 1.6 billion litres, the second fastest growth rate in the region after Cambodia.

Some foreign beer brands like Budweiser, Sapporo, San Miguel and Fosters have also entered the local market.

Last week, the Viet Nam Br$$$$$es Company opened a factory with the capacity to produce 50,000 bottles of La Rue beer per hour near the central city of Da Nang.

The company is a joint venture, newly-established between Asia Pacific Br$$$$$es (APB) from Singapore and Viet Nam’s Sai Gon Trading Group (SATRA).

As one of the first beer producers in Viet Nam after the country opened its doors to outside enterprise 20 years ago, APB plans to invest US$100 million in Viet Nam’s beer industry over the next 18 months.

Japan’s Sapporo also plans to link up with Tobacco Viet Nam to produce beer from 2012. The company said it would be the first Japanese brewery to build a production and marketing base in the promising Vietnamese market which has been growing at an annual rate of more than 10 per cent.

The US’s Crown Holdings Inc has already announced that it would invest another $25 million in its production facility in Tam Phuoc Industrial Zone in the southern province of Dong Nai. It bought the production line last June from Malaysia’s Interfood Shareholding Co.

Crown Asia Pacific Holdings Ltd’s chairman Josef Salaerts said the line, with a capacity of 600 million 330ml cans annually, could begin operations in the fourth quarter of this year, and its capacity would grow to 1.2 billion cans in a years time.

A report by British Business Monitor International Ltd predicted that earnings in Viet Nam’s alcoholic beverage industry were increasing 16 per cent annually.

Beer, which accounts for 97.9 per cent of total alcohol beverage consumption, was expected to see a growth in consumption averaging over 50 per cent per year through to 2013.

Da Nang holds its lead in IT Readiness

VietNamNet Bridge – According to the ITC Index 2010 report, Da Nang continues to top the country for IT application readiness, followed by HCM City and Hanoi.

The report was released last week by the National Steering Board for IT and the Vietnam IT Association.

At the bottom were Son La and Cao Bang provinces. Both are in the northern mountainous region.

Specifically, Da Nang ranks first in Vietnam for IT application and development, followed by HCM City and Hanoi. It ranks second in IT human resources, behind the Red River delta province of Vinh Phuc and ahead of HCM City.

Da Nang is the best in applying IT, followed by Dong Thap in the Mekong Delta and the northern port city of Hai Phong.

Hanoi, HCM City and Dong Nai earn the three top positions for IT business. Da Nang ranks fifth in this category.

In terms of IT organization and policy, Bac Giang, a northern province stood first, followed by the HCMC suburb of Binh Duong and Da Nang.

Among ministries and ministerial agencies, the Ministry of Education and Training climbed from second to first position, followed by the Ministry of Finance. The Ministry of Information and Communications jumped from eigth to third this year. Ironically, the Vietnam News Agency and the Vietnam Institute for Social Sciences are at the bottom.

According to this report, the IT application readiness index of ministries and ministerial agencies is generally higher than provinces and cities. Ninety percent of officials at ministries and central agencies can use computers compared to 76 percent of officials in provinces and cities.

Only 3.7 percent of ministries and central agencies have in-house IT experts, up 0.4 percent from 2009. All ministries have official websites, and so do all but one percent province.

Viettel and VinaPhone may distribute iPad in Vietnam

According to a source from Viettel, the company is surveying the market to decide whether it should distribute the iPad in Vietnam, with service packages included.

An official from VinaPhone said that Apple’s policies are consistent with creating competition among distributors. It means that if Viettel becomes the distributor of the iPad, VinaPhone will too. The prices, advertising policies, and launching time will be similar.

Most expensive phone numbers in Vietnam

VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnamese believe that using good numbers they will be lucky in life and business. Based on this idea, many people pay billions of dong to own special phone numbers to get luck and to show off their “rank”.

According to some online forums, a man recently paid $200,000 to buy the cell phone number 0903456789 (of MobiFone network). This number is expensive because 090 is the oldest network code and 3456789 is the best chain of forward numbers among ten-digit phone numbers. It is said that the price for this number is much higher now.

A SIM shop recently offered this number 01666666666 (of Viettel) at 2.5 billion dong ($132,000). This is a special phone number because 16 means luck in business, nine six numbers mean being luck forever.

VinaPhone’s number 0916888888 is fixed at 888 million dong ($46,700). It is explained that 091 is among the oldest network code in Vietnam, 168 means getting rich, and 888888 means good fortune.

People call this phone number as “Dream of Life”. It is forecast that the price of this phone number will exceed over 1 billion dong very soon.

At present, two of seven mobile networks in Vietnam have launched programs to sell “special phone numbers” to customers, Viettel and VinaPhone.

Geomancer Nguyen Tuan Kiet from the Vietnam Geomancy JS Company explained that each chain of numbers has a “soul” like the name of a person. According to geomancy, the names or numbers have influences in terms of Yin and Yang and five basic elements to the owner’s life.

He recommended people choose phone numbers based on geomancy. At present, numbers 8, 9 and 1 are considered good ones and Kiet recommended numbers with 8, 9 and 1 at the bottom.

According to Kiet, numbers that benefit users must be fit the users in terms of five basic elements. For example, if a person was born in 1978, he belongs to element fire so his phone number should not include number 1.

Therefore, good numbers depend on the user’s basic element.

Deputy Minister: China is example for controlling online gaming

VietNamNet Bridge – China should be a good example for Vietnam to learn from in managing online games, said Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Do Quy Doan in an online talk with VietNamNet’s readers.

According to Doan, Internet and online games are new to Vietnam so Vietnam should learn from other countries, especially China, which has the most developed online game industry in the Asia-Pacific.

Doan said that online gamers are strictly controlled in China through electronic ID. “Two years after China began using electronic ID, the adverse impact of online games has been controlled remarkably,” Doan claimed.

Doan emphasized that Vietnam should have its own ideas to fit the country’s situation.

“We should not copy exactly what China does to manage online games. We need to select suitable things to apply in Vietnam,” he added.

Le Hong Minh, Chair of the Association of Vietnam Game and Digital Content Providers, noted that Vietnam needs to learn from many developed countries besides China. He also asserted that local game distributors should find ways to develop both business and useful games for society.

Dr. Trinh Hoa Binh, a member of the National Council for Game Assessment, commented that Vietnam needs to apply scientific and intelligent measures to control online games while building a long-term strategy for online gaming.

Doan noted that the Ministry of Information and Communications had worked out five groups of solutions to control online games.

“At this moment, we have to use temporary solutions while waiting for long-term solutions. We have to issue a new document to replace Circular 60 to control online games, encourage the production of Vietnamese games and raise the public’s awareness of online games. In the long run, we will design the Law on Information Security on Internet.”

According to Doan, the MoIC will combine with the Ministry of Public Security to check information in order to make premise for controlling gamers by electronic ID.

Vietnam tunes in to skyscraper trend

Property developers in Vietnam are apparently locked in a race to build skyscrapers as a stronger economy allows them to pursue expensive projects with modern construction technology, experts say.

Deputy Chairman of the Vietnam Construction Federation, Pham Sy Liem, said the trend of building skyscrapers that began in the US has swept across many countries around the world.

“Developers in each country try to build record-breaking skyscrapers,” he said, adding that these projects help make the country more famous.

For instance, Cambodia last week announced that it plans to construct Asia’s tallest building with a US$200 million skyscraper 555 meters high.

The project is expected top the Taipei 101 Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Centre and Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Towers, which are also the world’s three tallest buildings after the 828-meter Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

Experts said the development of high rise buildings in Vietnam began around ten years ago, mainly in the country’s two largest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The new trend only came out in full bloom over the past couple of years.

Nguyen Lan, former Chief Architect in Hanoi, said limited construction skills had prevented the country from latching on to this trend sooner.

Now that the economy has expanded and new construction technology can be applied, it is easier for Vietnam to build skyscrapers with growing height, he said.

PetroVietnam Construction JSC, a subsidiary of state-owned Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, announced in July that it will build the country’s tallest tower in Hanoi with an investment of more than US$1 billion.

The 528-meter tower is expected to be completed by 2014.

If the plan goes ahead, the PVN Tower will surpass the 336-meter Keangnam Hanoi Landmark Tower, which has been holding the title of Vietnam’s highest building since its construction started in 2007. Hanoi Landmark Tower is scheduled for completion next year.

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City is going to have its own tallest building when the 262.5-meter Bitexco Financial Tower opens in October.

Liem of the Construction Federation said Vietnam is getting closer to being among the countries with the highest buildings in the world.

Local developers are competing over height as they know that a new height record will be a really good hook for their marketing campaign, Liem said. “A height advantage means developers will find it easier to attract customers, especially buyers of apartments.”

Architect Lan however warned that while skyscrapers do not take over a large area of land, they can further strain public infrastructure.

Each city should consider all aspects carefully before licensing skyscraper projects, he said.

Mekong Delta looking forward to flood season

VietNamNet Bridge – Farmers in the Mekong Delta are waiting for the flood season, which has been late for nearly two months. In the past, farmers caught shrimp and fish that were carried into paddy fields by floods.

Farmers in Mekong Delta provinces are facing a tough time caused by delayed floods. The flood season usually begins in early August and lasts around four months.

Centre found training thousands of MBA’s illegally

VietNamNet Bridge – There’s a joint training program that’s not appraised or authorized by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training. Its method is to link with a distance learning institution in the US that does not have permission to operate in Vietnam. Notwithstanding these seemingly fatal handicaps, since 2002 this program has graduated about 2000 MBA’s,earning $18 million in tuition and fees.

The Vietnamese partner is the Centre for International Training Cooperation (CIEC), which was established under the umbrella of the prestigious, semi-official Vietnam Study Encouragement Society (Hội Khuyến Học). The American partner is ‘Columbia Southern University’ (CSU), a for-profit distance learning institution.

CSU – what is it?

Googling reveals that CSU was established in 1993 in the US to provide online training to people who want to earn degrees but cannot take time to study at schools. CSU claims to have a current enrollment of 23,000 students and to have developed “since 2004, Learning Partnerships with hundreds of companies, cities, and police and fire organizations around the world.” It also says that it is approved to provide training at US Department of Defense expense, and that about half of its students were previously in the American armed forces.

It appears that in contrast to some foreign training institutions exposed recently by the Vietnamese press, CSU is not a total fraud. However, according to College Board, a university entrance testing organization in the US, CSU has not been recognized by any prestigious accreditation organizations in the US. Only the ‘Distance Education and Training Council (DETC)’ recognizes CSU as a distance training establishment.

In principle, people who want to study in the US for a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree ought to score at least 600 points on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), have two years’ experience, get good scores on the GMAT (Graduated Management Admission Test), and have letters of recommendation from their undergraduate university professors.

CSU’s standards are considerably lower. Learners just need to have a TOEFL score of 530 or score 6.0 on the IELTS. The requirements for following the MBA training course at CSU are easier than the requirements set by an average traditional university in the US.

Although the study can help improve knowledge of learners, the degrees and certificates provided by such online training schools do not have much value. However, as will be seen, CSU had ideal conditions in Vietnam to develop its training programme.

CITC’s Role. Not revealing his identity, a Tien Phong reporter approached a representative of the Centre for International Training Cooperation (CITC), saying he wanted to register for the CSU master’s programme. Nguyen Ngoc Nha Truc of CITC told the reporter-learner that if learners cannot meet the English skills requirements, they can take a supplementary English class organized by CITC which would last three weeks and cost 1.5 million dong. After participating in that course, Truc said, the learners will be capable of joining the regular training programme.

The CSU training programme is not listed among the 121 foreign training programmes that the Ministry of Education and Training allows to operate in Vietnam.

The courses are lucrative as well as illegal

CITC says the legal basis that allows it to carry out the joint training programme is Dispatch No 8621 (September 27, 2002) of the Ministry of Education and Training.

However, Tien Phong learned that in the document, the Ministry only authorized the centre to “provide consultancy, introduce and provide information to Vietnamese learners about online training programmes of prestigious domestic and international training establishments.”

This time identifying themselves as reporters, Tien Phong staff contacted CITC’s southern office at 7 Nguyen Binh Khiem Street in HCM City. Nguyen Ba Dat, an official there, said the office only introduces training programmes and provides enrolment information to learners.

However, the incognito reporter who met Nguyen Ngoc Nha Truc, got quite different information from the centre. Learners have to enroll with CITC and pay tuition directly to the centre. Tuition for the MBA programme is $8230, which does not include the cost of textbooks, $600.

Tien Phong reports that since 2002, CITC has organized 20 training courses in both the north and south of the country for a total of 2000 learners, many of whom were staff of State agencies.

have been following thread for while but just starting to post now. its been really helpful to read people's comments and experience. met a D1 salon girl the other night and had really nice time with her after work. she stayed with me at my hotel and we spent the night at hotel. may be hard to believe but we just slept together(not sex) no clothes at all, hugging and kissing all night long. was one of most amazing GFE i've had. she's quite young, kind and sweet. only working at salon 1 month. our connection was really intense and wonderful. she has the most amazing eyes and beautiful smile and the softest, loveliest skin i've felt. no money was exchanged, discussed or even asked for. we just spent 10 hours together enjoying each others company.

An ambitious programme to teach English in primary schools has been postponed due to teacher shortages and a dearth of funds.

The programme was designed to give pupils an early grounding in the language. The Ministry of Education and Training wanted at least 20 per cent of primary school pupils to be taught English in the 2010-11 academic year.

Under the programme, English will be a compulsory subject for third-grade to the fifth-grade students who will have four lessons per week.

However, a shortage of teachers has forced the ministry to withdraw the plan.

Le Tien Thanh, director of the Ministry of Education and Training’s Primary Education Department, said the programme had been successfully implemented in a few schools.

The programme was launched in 2003. However, the results have been disappointing.

Hoang Thi Dieu, principal of Bac Phu Primary School in Ha Noi’s Soc Son District, said students were only taught English twice a week.

She said the school had only two qualified English teachers and that it did not have the funds required to buy tapes, projectors and equipment to properly teach the subject.

An official at Soc Son Education and Training Bureau said some primary schools had already piloted teaching English but teacher shortages had meant they’d had to abandon the project.

The Viet Nam Education Science Institute said there were more than 4,000 teachers teaching English in primary schools across the country.

Institute deputy director Nguyen Loc said there were sufficient teachers to conduct a pilot programme in the country.

But Loc said about 2,000 more teachers needed to be trained each year. Only by so doing would primary schools be able to meet the ministry’s requirements, he said.

Thanh said teacher quality was a major concern.

"It depends on the actual capability of the teaching staff whose English language proficiency must meet international standards," said Thanh. "University degrees are meaningless by themselves."

About 15 cities and provinces will be selected to pilot the English teaching programme in the 2010-11 school year. In each area, between five and ten primary schools will take part in the scheme.

Loc said students from these schools would start learning English four times a week. The number of students taking part in the programme would increase in years to come, until the programme matures in 2020, he said.

HCM City pioneered the programme in primary schools.

Le Ngoc Diep, head of the city’s Education and Training Department, said the programme was implemented 12 years ago and that more than 47,000 primary school students had been taught English compulsorily.

He said the department would teach English to first-grade students from the second semester of this school year. Students of remaining grades had already studied English from the beginning of this school year, Diep said.

Under the programme, students must be able to listen to, identify, speak and write simple English words and phrases. They are also expected to answer simple questions about themselves and other people.

Chinese clinics claim cures for all diseases

VietNamNet Bridge – Traditional Chinese medicine clinics came into Vietnam several years ago with many “tricks” to draw in patients and sell medicine. Local newspapers have investigated these clinics and have reported an alarming situation.

Investigating Chinese clinics in Hanoi and HCM City

There are hundreds of traditional Chinese medicine clinics. These clinics are mainly located on Giai Phong, Truong Chinh, and Nguyen Trai road. Many of them advertise that they can cure diseases very quickly. A clinic on Giai Phong road advertised that its doctors can treat kidney failure after 30-60 minutes by using special remedies from famous Chinese physicians.

Pretending to be a man suffering from a sexually transmitted disease, a reporter visited a traditional Chinese medicine clinic in Ha Dong district. At around 8am, around a dozen patients were waiting their turn.

After paying 30,000 dong in medical examination fees, the reporter-turned-patient was led to the second floor to see the Chinese doctor. After hearing the patient present his symptoms through an interpreter, the Chinese doctor told the patient to stand next to the window and to take off his trousers. The patient was very shy because many vehicles and people were traveling outside the window, so he said he would only describer his symptoms.

After a talk between the interpreter and the Chinese doctor, the interpreter told the patient that the disease is very complicated and if he is not cured in a timely manner, he would be unable to have children and could contract cancer.

At a traditional Chinese medicine clinic on Giai Phong road, the Chinese doctor was very glad to welcome the reporter despite the reporter saying he didn’t want a check-up. The reporter purchased medicine and claimed it was for a friend who had warts on his penis.

The doctor prescribed three kinds of medicine, one to be taken orally, one applied on the skin, and another for soaking, saying that the disease could be treated if the patient took all three medications.

The doctor also promoted the benefits of a special medicine that he claimed could cure hepatitis B. “This is the disease that western medicine can’t cure. Only secret oriental medicines can help. If you don’t cure this disease, you will transmit it to your children and grandchildren,” he said.

Two reporters played a childless couple visiting a traditional Chinese medicine clinic in HCM City. At this clinic, doctors didn’t require any tests. Doctors asked the patients to tell them their symptoms. Doctors then took their patients’ pulses, examined their tongues, and wrote prescriptions for the childless couple.

At a Chinese clinic on Tran Hung Dao street, District 5, the couple had to pay 20,000 dong for medical examination fees to see a man who spoke Chinese and sat next to two girls in shorts. After the couple said that they had been married for a long time but didn’t have a child yet, the interpreter and the Chinese doctor exchanged glances for a while. The interpreter then told the husband: “Your kidney and your sperm are weak. Because the sperm is weak, they couldn’t get into your wife’s womb so you can’t have children”.

As a treatment, the Chinese doctor told the couple to take medicine for three months that would improve kidney function and the strength of his sperm. “You have to take medicine uninterrupted,” the interpreter emphasized.

Through the interpreter, the Chinese doctor advertised that his clinic is “very good at curing hepatitis B and C.”

Visiting a small clinic on Hung Vuong road, District 10, also with medical examination fees of 20,000 dong, the reporter-couple saw a young man in a T-shirt, who was introduced as a “Chinese doctor.” After hearing the couple describe their troubles, the doctor said: “We have medicine for priapism and infertility for both men and women.” [Priapism is a medical condition in which the penis or clitoris does not return to a flaccid state within four hours.]

After talking with the doctor for awhile, the interpreter suddenly asked the husband: “How long can you have sex? It is normal if it takes 15-20 minutes so you can have children. Could you last that long?”

As the man shook his head, the Chinese doctor began to feel the man’s pulse. The doctor examined the tongues of the couple and concluded that the couple’s kidneys and livers were weak.

“If your kidneys work well, he can have sex three times a week. Your kidneys don’t reach the maximum level. Western doctors don’t feel the pulse of patients so they don’t know whether your kidneys work well or not. The earlier you treat your kidneys, the better off you will be,” the doctor said.

The doctor suggested the man take medicine to improve his kidney health within 80 days, stating that the medicine succeeded up to 80-90 percent of the time.

At another clinic on Ly Thuong Kiet road, District 5, the reporters declared that they had sex 2-3 times a week, 15-20 minutes each time, but they still didn’t have children.

“Do you feel hot inside? Do you sleep well?” the Chinese doctor asked.

“Very well,” the couple answered. Thinking for a while, the doctor concluded that their kidneys were not healthy and they had to take medicine.

The doctor at a traditional Chinese medicine clinic on Lac Long Quan road also said that the man suffered from kidney failure after the reporter-patient said he had backaches for a long time. “You have to take medicine for 2-3 months,” the doctor suggested.

Selling medication – top priority

All traditional Chinese medicine clinics in Hanoi and HCM City aim to sell medication at high prices. Investing in overhead is not expensive. They only need to rent a small house equipped with several tables, chairs, and 1-2 beds.

All the Chinese doctors offered to sell high-priced medicine to the couple to cure kidney failure. Medicine was priced from 200,000 to 300,000 dong ($10-15)/day and the couple was asked to take medicine for at least 30 days (totaling around 6 million dong a month). Doctors explained that the prices are high because the medicine is imported from China at high import tax rates. They always urged the couple to buy medicine for at least one month.

When the couple said they didn’t have enough money to buy medicine for a whole month, some doctors asked them to pay a deposit.

Tran Hai Duc, a genital warts patient, said: “Advertisements said the warts would fall off 3-5 minutes after applying the medicine. I paid 15 million dong ($800) to buy medicine for one month but the disease doesn’t ease up.”

Tran Huu Vinh, chief of HCM City Department of Health’s Traditional Medicine Division, said Chinese doctors are only permitted to sell herbal medicines at their clinics. If they sell medicine, the medicine must be registered with the local Department of Health. Advertisements of foreign clinics must be approved by the Ministry of Health. However, Chinese clinics oftentimes don’t obey these rules.

When Chinese clinics were booming in Vietnam about five to six years ago, health inspectors detected that many clinics recruited fake Chinese doctors who didn’t have diplomas or licenses to practice medicine in Vietnam.

After a quiet period, Chinese clinics have returned.

Kids grow up in ‘nomad villages’

VietNamNet Bridge – They are the children of builders who live in the dust of construction sites in temporary tents. They move with their parents from one job site to another. They don’t study at school and lack a regular pattern of life.

Construction on the East-West avenue in HCM City is now in the final stage. Rows of workers’ tents still line up along Ham Tu road.

Passing these tents, you can hear kids’ voices. This is a “village” of builders from southwestern provinces, with a population that includes nearly 20 kids. The eldest is around 14 and the youngest is less than 1 year.

Living in this “village” since the construction started, Nguyen Van Do, 14, is the ‘leader’ of the kids. Born in Dong Thap province, Do had to quit studying at age 9 to follow his parents to many construction sites.

While his parents work, Do walks to the downtown to sell lottery tickets. Kids in the ‘village’ said Do has ‘broad knowledge’ because he has lived in many places.

“In Vung Tau, I lived in a tent near a cashew forest. In Binh Duong, my parents hired a guest-house, not a tent,” Do boasted.

Le Van Tuan, 11, also bragged: “There are several high buildings in District 2. My parents built them! Do you know Cha Va Bridge? My parents also built it!”

Also born in Dong Thap, Tuan had to quit school when he was 8 to baby-sit his younger brother. One year ago, his parents brought Tuan and his brother to HCM City. Before joining the East-West project, they worked for three smaller projects in District 2 and Tan Binh district. They always lived in small tents at construction sites.

In this ‘village’, Tuan’s family shares a small tent with another family. His most favourite time of the day is 5pm, when his parents return home and he doesn’t have to babysit.

“I want to become a football player like those on television. If I have money, I will built a big house like the one my parents built in District 2,” Tuan stated.

“We want to send him to school, but life is very hard in our home village so we must bring him with us,” observed Tuan’s father, Le Van Soc.

“There is a kindergarten on the other side of the road, but we can’t afford to send my baby too,” explained Truong Bich Ngoc, Tuan’s mother.

In this village, the family of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Phuong and Mr. Nguyen Van Minh from Dong Thap province is the largest with three generations sharing a tent. They have nine children and their fifth daughter, Nguyen Thi Lien, and her 8-month-old child are also living with them.

It seems that they understand their “gypsy” life; the children in this village rarely get sick.

Shifting from one site to another, most of kids are illiterate. “I’ve forgotten all the letters. I only remember ‘O’ and ‘A’,” confessed Nguyen Thi Tuyet, aged 12.

“What do you like the most?” “Going to school,” Tuyet responded.

Tuyet’s dream may be the dream of all children here. Tuyet and her two brothers and sister want to become police officers. Why? “Because If I’m a police officer, I will allow kids to play football on the road,” Tuyet’s younger sister, Nhi, explained.

Actually, it is very dangerous to play football on the near-by road, but these kids don’t have a playground. If they don’t play football there, they must play on piles of iron or containers surrounded by needles and broken glass.

Collecting rubbish is a favourite job of these kids. They often exchange used bottles for ice cream or cakes.

Huynh Thai Phong, aged 12, is considered to be the best “waste collector” even though he always carries his younger sister (less than 1 year old) with him.

“I’m saving money to go to Dam Sen park when my parents complete this work. None of us has ever been there,” Phong noted.

All of them want to go home. In their talks, along with stories about construction sites, are tales of their hometowns.

“In my hometown, I can bathe in the river or ride a cow . . . but my parents said that after this job, we will go to another place, not home,” Phong sighed.

“I also want to go home to pick tamarinds. It is very boring here!” Tuyet exclaimed.

At the construction site of Thu Thiem tunnel, Vu Binh Duong from Nghe An is the smallest child. At the age of 2, the baby has followed his parents to three construction sites. The young parents will try to send their child to a kindergarten in District 2.

“Kids will get wise very quickly at school. We are illiterate, so my children must go to school,” reasoned Nguyen Thi Tuyen, Duong’s mother.

High grade apartments sit empty and silent

VietNamNet Bridge – Owners of high grade apartments have all been lowering rental charges to lure clients. Daily, the number of vacant apartments has been increasing. A lot of investors, who purchased apartments for later resale or lease to earn a profit are now like cats on hot bricks.

Tuoi tre has reported that a lot of new apartment projects have been completed and many will be delivered to clients soon. Their sources say the market will have an oversupply, as the number of clients able to rent such apartments is limited.

Showing Tuoi tre reporters an apartment at Central Garden in HCM City, Minh, a real estate broker, remarked that he has never seen such a dramatic rental decrease. A 90 square metre apartment with two bedrooms and good furniture can now be rented for only 14 million dong per month (about $700). It was once leased at $850 per month, but the tenant left when the leasing contract ended.

Minh revealed that many other apartments in the building are also leased at rates down by $100-150 per month in comparison with one year ago.

At Saigon Pearl, an area with “five star standards”, rental rates have also dropped sharply. For example, an apartment at SG Pearl Ruby 1 with two bedrooms (84-89 square metres), plus good home comforts and interior, is now offered at $800 per month, a decrease of $150-200 from previous rates.

The list of buildings in the same predicament is growing: Cantavil An Phu in District 2, Cantavil Hoan Cau in Binh Thanh, The Everich in District 11 and Hung Vuong Plaza in District 5 all have seen the rental charges decreasing.

Even though the rents have eased, it is not easy to find tenants. H, the owner of an apartment with three bedrooms at Central Garden, has not found a renter over the last month.

According to a real estate company director, there are too many new high grade apartments put into operation recently, leading to the sharp climb in supply. Meanwhile, demand has not increased, so leasing fees have plummeted.

He pointed out that The Manor Officetel in District 1 alone provided 620 new apartments, while 300 apartments opened at The Everich I in District 11 at the end of 2009. Another source observed that 530 apartments of Sapphire building will be delivered in 2010 and there will also be thousands apartments at projects like The Vista and The Estella.

In addition to high grade apartments, projects in lower market segments like Orient Apartment or Constrexim in District 4, each of which has hundreds of apartments, have also been opened. The majority are leased with “soft” rentals.

“Though the rents have eased, they remain relatively high and unaffordable for many people who have real demand for accommodation. The number of people who are financially able to rent these apartments is really modest,” a director of a real estate firm maintained.

Potential tenants of the apartments are expats, overseas Vietnamese who return to Vietnam to do business, and some Vietnamese with high incomes.

Are large Vietnamese beer imports abnormal?

VietNamNet Bridge – Brewery products from Belgium, Germany, the US, Mexico, and the Netherlands have been flowing to Vietnam. The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) has allowed Vietnam Brewery Company to import a large volume of Heineken products. According to customs agents, foreign products are flowing to Vietnam because of the sharp decrease in the luxury tax.

Why so much imported beer?

MOIT has allowed the Vietnam Brewery Company to import 650,000 boxes of Heineken brand beer (24 330 ml-cans per box). The declared imports will be used for marketing and market research, which means that they must not be used for retail sales.

However, observers have pointed out that 650,000 boxes of beer are too many for marketing and market research.

According to an official from the customs agency at Saigon port, he has never seen such a large imported beer consignment before. 650,000 boxes of beer means 5.15 million liters of beer valued at 195 billion dong. Most beer products go through Cat Lai port, which accounts for 80 percent of the imports and exports going through HCM City and neighboring provinces.

Tran Huy, a beer distributor in HCM City, said there are two types of imported Heineken beer: 500 ml cans and 250 ml cans. Meanwhile, the 330ml cans are produced in Vietnam. An official from Vict port states that if companies want to conduct market research, they only need to import small volumes of beer. He also noted that imported items are generally products not produced in Vietnam, so it is unlikely that companies import such a high volume of beer just to conduct market research.

A brewery company representative said domestic production has exceeded demand. Many br$$$$$es have left their production lines idle, so it is very unusual to see so much imported beer.

The beer consumption level per capita is estimated to be 28 liters per year. Meanwhile, there are 350 br$$$$$es nationwide, including 20 factories which have the capacity to produce over 20 million liters per year, 15 factories with a capacity of over 15 million liters, and 260 workshops with a capacity of less than one million liters per year.

Lower tariffs prompt more imports

While 650,000 boxes of Heineken beer are arriving in Vietnam, a lot of other brewery products are also flowing into the domestic market.

Most recently, at international food and drink exhibitions, imported beer products were introduced alongside domestically made products. The salesmen said foreign producers were looking for distributors to sell their products in Vietnam.

According to the customs agency at Saigon port, revenue from beer imports through Cat Lai port reached $282,661, while 33,842 boxes and 40,140 bottles received custom clearances. The import revenue has increased by nearly 55.2 percent over the same period from last year

Gold hits all-time high

The price of gold in Vietnam hit a record high on September 15 after global market climbed to an all-time high of US$1,276 an ounce as a worsen European financial turmoil spurred the demand for the metal as a safe-haven.
At most gold shops, the metal was bought at VND29.7 million and sold at VND29.75 million shares, an increase of VND400,000 a tael.

Domestically, gold fetched VND450,000 a tael lower than global prices.

Jewelers continued to keep a narrow range between selling and buying prices at to boost trading as bullion market became muted after the metal hit VND29.5 million.

Dollar exchange rate on black market remained stable. The greenback was bought at VND19,490, and sold at VND19,510.

Commercial banks purchased the US dollar at VND19,450, and sold at VND19,500, almost unchanged in the past few weeks.

Internationally, the precious metal surged to record on demand for a haven against turmoil in the global economy and financial markets.

Gold for immediate delivery jumped 1.9 percent to close at $1,269.7 an ounce, marking the strongest rally in the past four months, after fluctuating between $1,256.4 and $1,275.7 an ounce.

In Asia, after sliding because of profit-taking, the metal resumed gains. Spot gold was trading at $1,270 an ounce as of 9am Vietnamese time.

Most major investment funds bought gold heavily after just watching the market for about a week. SPDR Gold Trust, the largest exchange-traded gold-backed fund, purchased 6.1 metric tons, increasing its holdings to 1,298.7 metric tons, figures on the company’s website showed.

The US economic data released yesterday was all positive numbers. Retail sales rose 0.4 percent in August. While inventory edged up 1 percent in July, the highest level in the past two months.

However, economic recovery outlook became faltering in Europe as statistics announced the same day showed that German investor confidence, which aims to predict developments six months ahead, dropped to 19-month low. Meanwhile, a positive report on GDP growth by European Commission imposed debasement pressure on the precious metal one day earlier.

Gold is heading for a tenth consecutive annual rally and has advanced 16 percent this year amid economic uncertainty.

The dollar exchange rate against the euro sharply dropped to $1.3 a euro in Tokyo this morning.

Light sweet crude oil slipped $0.39 a barrel, or 0.5 percent, to close at $76.8 a barrel.

This morning, crude oil traded near $76 a barrel.

VietNamNet Bridge - The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has decided to enhance punishments on illegal acts in establishment of educational institutes.

Under a decision issued by the ministry, anyone to illicitly set up educational facilities from pre-schools to universities will receive fines ranging from VND10 to 100 million. Forming classes without permission of the local government will be fined VND500,000 to over VND10million.

Educational institutes will be penalized over VND40 million if they grant students licenses which doesn’t come within their jurisdiction. Schools shortening curriculums will be fined over VND200,000.

MOET will impose punishment on those universities who have enrolled students more than regulated admission.

The maximum fine of VND 10 million will be inflicted on abusing students and teachers’ physical and mental health.

MOET complained some managers did not fulfill their duty of implementing punishments ruled in a MOET previous regulation.

Woman fined for prostituting herself

SINGAPORE: A Vietnamese woman who gambled away her money at the Marina Bay Sands casino was fined $700 Wednesday for prostituting herself there.

Thirty-six-year-old Duong Linh Thao talked to security guard 50-year-old Rames Algasamy as he walked past early last Saturday morning.

She offered the guard sexual services for S$200, a District Court heard.

When he refused, Duong "persistently offered to provide sexual services" to Mr Rames. He then called the police.

Apologising in court, Duong said she went to gamble at the casino but lost all her money. That was when she decided to commit the offence.

Charged under the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act, she could have been fined up to $1,000.

Urban teachers “find” sky-high income
=============================================

VietNamNet Bridge – Salaries paid by the State to general school teachers are too low to feed their families. Teachers in urban areas can still obtain high income through teaching extra classes.

KD Primary School is a well known school in Hanoi and all parents dream of bringing their children to this “star” school. However, the number of seats is limited and there are too many applicants. Parents have spread the word that, to get a seat there, every student needs close relations with the school’s leaders and to pay $1000. The sum goes into the pockets of the school’s managers.

As for other teachers, the most popular way to earn money is teaching extra classes, which can be set up at schools, centres or homes of teachers

A survey conducted in 2004 by Dr. Nguyen Thi Quy from the Education Research Institute under HCM City Pedagogical University showed that 45.3 percent of students in HCM City go to extra classes.

Not only teachers, but school managers can also earn money from the extra teaching. Students who attend extra classes pay an “administration fee”, 15-20 or even 40 percent of tuition rates. The schools’ management boards can pocket these sums, so school staff can earn tens of millions of dong, or several thousands dollars, each month. This is considered a “sky-high” income in Vietnam.

According to the General Statistics Office, the income per capita in Vietnam in 2009 was $1000 per annum.

On average, teachers can earn 3-5 million dong per month in “extra income” through extra teaching. Quy’s survey also showed that, in big cities, income from extra classes can be up to 4-6 million dong a month.

The tuitions also vary, depending on the fame of teachers. Teachers of Hanoi-Amsterdam Gifted High School are considered as having the highest extra income, because this is such a famous school.

Some claim that the most qualified teachers of the school earn 60-70 million dong a month.

High school students talk a lot about TVB, an experienced math teacher. The teacher spends most of his time on extra classes, where he earns at least 500,000 for every lesson. On average, TVB has three “shifts” a day, which means that he can earn 1.5 million dong a day, an income most people earn for the month.

There are many teachers like TVB. Right in 2004, a survey on extra classes in HCM City showed that a famous teacher could earn up to 200 million dong.

Teachers nowadays do not live on their State salaries. The total income earned from the State by some teachers of Hanoi-Amsterdam Gifted High School is just several million dong. V, a teacher at the age of 50, gets 3.6 million dong a month, while V.A, who is about to retire, gets 3.9 million dong.

At KD Primary School, a teacher born in 1971 is receiving 1.3 million dong a month from the State. Even the headmaster at age 48 with 20 years of experience, obtains 3.4 million dong. Most other teachers get two million dong.

At KL Primary School, there are only a few teachers who have salaries of more than three million dong a month, and all will retire soon.

Parents condemn ‘hidden’ school fees

Schools have been found to be charging parents with a raft of extra fees, including fees to cover costs to keep schools clean as well as fees to help cover schools' power bills.

A parent of a young boy attending a pre-school in Ba Dinh District said she was asked to contribute to a so called "donation fund" shortly after the start of the 2010-11 school term early this month.

Parents had also been asked to pay a long list of other fees, averaging at VND100,000 (US$5.1) each, she said.

Another pre-school in the same district collected up to VND1 million ($52) per student for school construction fees.

Duong Thu Ha in Tay Ho District said she had to pay "unreasonable" fees for her daughter's primary school education.

"Current regulations stipulate that students at State-owned primary schools are exempt from tuition and only have to pay several non-tuition fees," Ha said. "But these fees in fact cost even more money than the actual tuition fees."

Earlier this month, central Da Nang City's People's Committee warned the Tran Van On Primary School in Hai Chau District against collecting illicit non-tuition fees, Nguoi Lao Dong (The Labourer) reports.

The school had collected between VND200,000 to VND1.5 million ($11-$77) per student for a so-called "voluntary contribution" fund.

Parents at Huynh Ngoc Hue Primary School in the same province's Thanh Khe District were asked to contribute to the school's fund-raising efforts and to help pay for the purchase of teaching equipment.

Parents of children at the school's grade 1 classes were required to contribute money to buy a new liquid cristal display (LCD) TV along with other items which cost a total of VND20 million ($1,030). Each student's parents had to pay VND500,000 ($26).

Meanwhile the province's regulations state that the maximum contributions from each parent must not be more than VND100,000 ($5.1), and should be made on a voluntary basis. In addition, the money must not be used for buying school equipment.

The collection of illicit fees by many schools has also raised concerns among parents in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta region.

Head of An Giang Province's Education and Training Department Nguyen Thien Nguyen said primary students were not obliged to pay insurance premiums, even though this was compulsory at most schools.

Vu Nhu Trong, a farmer in Thai Binh Province said his son's school collected VND230,000 ($11) for insurance fee, not to mention other fees.

"Such an amount of money is quite large for a farmer like me," he said.

Pham Minh Hac, former minister of Education and Training, said a lack of financial transparency at schools due to unspecific regulations from the State was the main cause of the problem.

Hac said the Government should clearly stipulate regulations on non-tution fees and apply them strictly.

The director of the Ha Noi Education and Training Department said the negative phenomenon occured partly due to parents, as they did not report their concerns to authorities in a timely manner.

The department would hold a meeting with parents' associations to provide more specific guidelines to prevent further violations.

Minister of MOET Pham Vu Luan said schools could not collect unreasonable amounts of money if parents did not agree, so parents should join hands in fighting for financial transparency in schools.

Migrants on the margins

A third of 60,000 workers sent abroad every year return worse-off than before.

Nhung decided to migrate to Taiwan in 2004 and become a domestic worker in the hope that she would make enough money to support her family back in rural Hanoi.

The 42-year-old mother of two needed to support her unemployed husband’s medical treatment for diabetes and liver diseases. He physically abused her and their children often and spent the family’s money on gambling and alcohol. But she had to take care of her children, and this job offered a way out.

Two months later, Nhung was back, with her own health problems. Her savings, US$400, were not sufficient to repay loans of more than $700 she’d taken out to meet her pre-migration costs. Nhung and her family were in worse straits now.

“I shared a room with the elderly lady I was looking after her. She slept in the bed, while I slept on the floor next to her... They feared that I would run away; so they seldom let me go out,” she said about her experience abroad.

Nhung’s case is not rare. In fact, many Vietnamese citizens have landed themselves in worse situations after working abroad.

Poor working conditions, being underpaid and cheated by brokers in Vietnam are common experiences that guest workers have gone through.

Not only have they had to work for lower payment than promised, some have even lost the money they paid without being sent abroad.

At a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Tuesday (September 14), Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, admitted that many Vietnamese workers had been cheated by illegal labor brokers.

There are also many cases where legal firms have sent workers abroad and washed their hands of any further responsibility, she added.

According to the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, only 30 percent of the total 167 labor export firms are operating effectively.

Government statistics show that more than 60,000 workers have been sent to work abroad every year since 2001 on average. Around 500,000 Vietnamese workers are working abroad in 40 countries and territories. Malaysia tops the list with 90,000 Vietnamese guest workers, followed by South Korea with 45,000.

According to a report titled “International labor migration from Vietnam to Asian countries: Process, Experiences and Impact” published in March by the Institute of Social Development Studies, a majority of workers have said that their overall situation improved after working abroad, but a very significant proportion saw no improvement and many reported their lives had taken a turn for the worse.

The report, which examined the experiences of migrant workers from Vietnam who have worked in the four major destination countries and territories: Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, found that this polarization emerges from the variability in pre-migration costs, working conditions, degree and frequency of deception, net earnings, work injuries and the migrants’ overall self-assessment of the impact of migration on themselves and their families.

“In light of the frequent negative migration outcomes uncovered in this survey, we believe that the potential benefits of international labor migration for migrants, their families, communities and Vietnam as a country are seriously compromised,” authors of the report said.

The most negative outcomes included 33 percent of workers abroad being sent home earlier than contracted and an equal proportion failing to pay their pre-departure debt entirely after return. Overall, 41 percent of respondents reported a negative assessment of migration, and 33 percent of migrants felt they had been deceived during the migration process, the report found.

The report said it takes an average of 18 months of working abroad to repay pre-departure debts and most early returnees are saddled with the obligation for a long time after their return.

Tuan, another worker from rural Hanoi, said he had been cheated by a private broker who had promised him a job abroad with a monthly salary of $570 with food expenses covered by the employer.

The broker took $4,700, without providing any invoice or receipt, to cover pre-departure costs and extra-money for incidental costs associated with intermediaries involved in Tuan’s recruitment. Tuan also paid more than $100 for language training which he never received.

Tuan said he realized that he had been a victim of fraud only a few hours before boarding the plane, when the broker presented Tuan with his final contract citing a lower salary and less favorable working conditions than promised. But he had to sign the contract if he wished to migrate.

Growing concerns

At the meeting of the National Assembly (NA)’s Standing Committee on September 14, the Labor Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan said her agency had censured violating employment agencies.

“We have inspected and asked these firms to strictly follow laws relating to sending workers abroad and honor their commitments to the workers,” she said.

However, legislators called for the revocation of business licenses of agencies that had committed violations and were not functioning properly.

“Why should we keep those firms who send less than 100 workers abroad every year?” asked Ksor Phuoc, Chairman of the NA’s Ethnic Minorities Committee.

Deputy Le Quang Binh agreed with Phuoc. He said: “It is necessary to revoke the license of those failing to meet criteria [stipulated in the Law for Contracted Vietnamese Workers Working Abroad]. We have to prevent violations like illegal brokering close firms that cheat [workers].”

Legislators at the meeting called for stricter enforcement of labor export laws, making timely amendments and updates to regulations, and increasing awareness of the risks involved among workers wishing to go abroad.

Teacher shortage explained: distance, salary, non-teaching assignments

VietNamNet Bridge – The new school year began one month ago, but many HCM City schools lack enough teachers. At the same time, a lot of education school graduates cannot find jobs and must take positions outside their majors.

TP graduated from the philology faculty at HCM City Pedagogical University, but cannot become a teacher. The city’s authorities have assigned TP to work as a supervisor at a high school.

TP is not alone. A lot of other education school grads have no chance to teach.

According to Van Cong Sang, Head of Personnel for HCM City Education and Training Department, after two phases of recruiting teachers for general schools, 400 teachers have been left redundant. Of these, about 100 teachers have been assigned to work as supervisors or work in school laboratories.

In the past, university graduates always had to take the jobs assigned to them. Now the situation is quite different. “I have applied to teach at schools in Districts 3, 5 or 6. I will not take a job if I am assigned to work in the suburbs,” PPH, a newly graduated teacher, told Tuoi tre newspaper. “I would rather take a job at a private institution than a state-owned school in the suburbs. If I have to travel too far to get the school, the expenses on petrol alone will gobble up a half of my salary.”

The continuing education centre in Tan Binh District needed nine teachers for the new school year. One refused the position, and two others quit. Now the centre has only six new teachers.

Similarly, the HCM City Education and Training Department assigned four teachers to Cu Chi District’s Continuing Education Centre, none have arrived yet.

According to Van Cong Sang, teachers who reside permanently in HCM City will not work at schools located far from the city’s centre. Only teachers from other provinces are not choosy, but some have “local” accents, deemed unsuitable for teaching, therefore, they have been asked to stop teaching.

Many suburban schools complain that they do not have a stable workforce, because nearly all teachers wish to leave after two or three years. The schools in remote areas seriously lack teachers, because they cannot offer attractive wages or working conditions.

Before the new school year began, many teachers left their schools. H, a history teacher, explained that her home is in Tan Phu District and so she must travel a long distance to reach her school in Binh Chanh District. H observed that she must spend too much money on gas, while the lengthy travel does not allow her to have strong enough health to teach.

Inner city schools also complain that they have lost qualified teachers. Many left for private schools with higher wages and other preferences.

Ten years ago, HCM City had many redundant primary school teachers, but in the last two years, they have faced a shortage. As the result, schools must arrange classes with high numbers of students.

Electricity still cut in Mekong Delta’s rainy season

VietNamNet Bridge – Water reservoirs do not have enough water for hydropower plants even though it is the rainy season. Power companies claim they cannot say exactly when electricity supplies will return to normal.

Residents of Tien Giang province have been miserable over the last two weeks, because electricity is cut once every three days. In My Tho City and Cai Be District, electricity is cut every two days, from early morning until 7 pm. However, in some places, power only comes back after 10 pm. This has upset people’s lives.

Luu Thanh Nam, Director of Tien Giang province’s Power Company, confirmed that the company must cut power due to the electricity shortage. Since Tien Giang provincial People’s Committee decided to prioritise state agencies, industrial zones and big enterprises, “small clients”, including small production workshops and households must bear the electric outages.

“Everyday, the electricity cut in Tien Giang province is as high as 50-60MW, or 60 percent of the total electricity output provided to the whole province. Therefore, clients have suffered,” Nam explained.

Nam asserted that his company cannot cut power just for several hours they will have to cut power in many areas. “In general, electricity is cut from 6 am to 7 pm. We still do not know when the supply will return to normal,” Nam added.

In An Giang and Dong Thap provinces, what makes residents tetchy is that power companies do not notify them in advance. Power companies protest that even they do not know the supply schedules.

Director of An Giang Power and Water Company Tran Thanh Hoang explained that his company distributes electricity to the whole province, but he does not know in advance about power cut schedules. Meanwhile, Vo Thanh Duyen, Director of An Giang Power Company calculated that the volume of electricity allocated to the company has dropped by 1/3.

“Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) needs to release an official notice explaining the reasons behind the electricity cuts and inform us of power cuts, so that we can provide information to residents,” Duyen argued.

According to Pham Huu Khai, Director of Dong Thap province’s Power Company, EVN has said that the gas run power plant Nam Con Son is now under maintenance, so the volume of electricity allocated for the province has dropped by 20 percent.

Nguyen Ngoc Thanh, Director of Dong Nai provincial Power Company, claimed that the output is still high enough for industrial zones, but the company must cut power for households as requested by Southern Electricity Regulatory Centre.

Pham Hien Thien Ly from Ben Tre provincial Power Company also confirmed that, since the beginning of September, the company must cut 20-40 MW a day as ordered or the power system will fail, causing large-scale power outages.

Deputy Chair of Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee Hoang Sy Son has asked the provincial power company to restrict power cuts to ensure enough electricity for key enterprises making export products.

Study abroad, staying abroad: some facts versus myths

VietNamNet Bridge – To attract more students, overseas study consultant firms use new tricks to persuade students to go abroad: they encourage students to settle in foreign countries after graduation.

Private companies that promote overseas study cannot ensure that students will be granted visas for working or settling abroad after they finish school. These visas must be approved by the foreign government and these are limited in number. In fact, study visa applicants must show three things: that they are real students, have the ability to pay for school and a plan to return to Vietnam after graduation. If students cannot persuade consulate officers of all three, they will be denied.

This is a statement made by the US Consulate in HCM City. Still, a lot of overseas study consultant firms still work to help students obtain visas.

On www.vatgia.com, an advertisement reads: “Do you want to settle in the US? We are seeking students who want to study pharmacy in the US and settle here after three years. The program fee is $50,000.”

Tien Phong reporters, after a lot of efforts to make appointments, came to the office of Hiep A Company, a company specializing in trade and construction. The reporters acted as students wanting to studying abroad and met Phuong Lan, the company’s chair, at the head office located in a small alley on Pho Quang Street in Tan Binh district in HCM City.

Lan told the reporters-students that she has an office in the US and she cooperates with the US Department of State. Her department has “reserved several seats” in the US and can help people settle there if they want.

“This is a specific training program at a company in southern California that has a close relation with Hiep A. Students will be able to study and work at the same time, so the job will bring income to students,” Lan explained.

Though the advertised package fee is $50,000, Lan told the reporters that they will have to pay only $35,000, including the visa fee, tuition and green card cost.

“The money will be paid two times. You must pay some right now to cover visa expenses, and you must pay the remainder before boarding the plane,” she added.

Loan also promised to obtain green cards for them after four months in the US.

Visas to the US in . . . Singapore?

Meanwhile, other overseas study consultant groups help students obtain the right to settle in the US if students study in a third country. Duc Tu Overseas Study Consultancy Company (DTU), headquartered in HCM City, is now seeking students for a new training program. Students will study nursing in Singapore, but will work and settle in the US.

A company officer said that the program has three phases. At first, students will follow “pre-nursing” (3-12 months) in Singapore. After that, they will be granted visas to the US for the “Direct Nurse” phase and then, upon graduation, the students will be recruited to work for Alliance for five years.

Also according to DTU, learners can extend their contracts when their working period terminates. The package fee is $14,900.

Asia International Talent Resource Investment JSC (AITRI) is also seeking students for a “Direct Nurse” program. The company introduces itself as the only company assigned by American Career, the coordinator of DirectNurse® program of Academic Alliance, to enroll students

According to Nguyen Ngoc Quynh, a senior official of the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the US market has demand for foreign workers, but they must meet very strict requirements to enter the US.

Different kinds of US visas are granted to foreign workers. For example, H1A visa is granted to nurses who have degrees recognized in the US and have TOEFL scores of 550.

However, Quynh stressed that, to date, his ministry has not allowed any companies to select nurses for work in the US.

VietNamNet Bridge – Many people have visited traditional Chinese medicine clinics based on false advertisements in newspapers and on websites. The results have been disturbing.

A website posted a big article introducing a traditional Chinese medicine clinic at 108 Tran Phu, Ha Dong District, Hanoi. According to this article, the clinic uses Chinese traditional cures, rare herbs and hi-tech machines, all successfully treating many patients. The article also provided the names, addresses and phone numbers of patients who have recovered after visiting this clinic.

Nguyen Truong Tho, 48, one of the patients who advertised as cured from rheumatism, remarked: “Their medicines were very expensive, from 800,000-1 million dong/small recipe. I paid 23 million dong ($1,300) a month, but I didn’t feel better. I went to a hospital for examination and was diagnosed with a different disease. I was then treated at the hospital and I’ve recovered.”

Tho was annoyed at being called very often by the ad’s readers. “I told them that all the information in that advertisement is wrong,” Tho noted.

When he came to the clinic, he didn’t see the prescription. The Chinese doctor only asked about symptoms and then wrote a prescription in Chinese and gave it to his employee. When asked about the prescription, the staff said that he didn’t need to see it because he would not understand.

Tho also witnessed clinic employees running to hide medicines when health inspectors visited.

Nguyen Thi Mai Oanh was listed in the ad too, but gave the same report. She immediately dissuaded: “Please don’t visit that clinic to be cheated like me. I lost dozens of millions of dong and gained nothing.”

According to Oanh, this clinic used information of patients like her without their permission to make false advertisements.

Many Chinese traditional medicine clinics hired people to advertise for their services. Nguyen Thi Thu, who sells bun cha (vermicelli and grilled chopped meat) at Nghia Tan market, Cau Giay district, Hanoi was hired to “play” a patient to say thank to a Chinese clinic for treating her disease on an advertising clip on Ha Tay Province’s television channel. Thu said that clinic paid her 200,000 ($10) for that clip.

Many patients called or sent emails to local newspapers, complaining that they had been cheated by Chinese traditional medicine clinics.

Tran Thi Tam lost money and also contracted another disease from a Chinese clinic on Giai Phong road, Hanoi.

Tam endured arthritis for several years and had visited many hospitals, to no avail. Reading an advertisement about a Chinese clinic that cured arthritis, she immediately made an appointment.

“The interpreter said I would feel better after taking 7-8 doses. After three days, my nose didn’t run anymore, but afterwards the symptoms returned. On the 10th day, my chest swelled very big and I had to go to hospital.”

Tam paid nearly 5 million dong ($250) to buy eight concoctions from the clinic. “Before taking this medicine, I could walk normally. After the 4th and 5th doses, I felt a lot of pain, but I tried to take all 8 doses. I lost 6 kilos, my body turned white and my limbs rolled up. My family thought I would die. They brought me to the Traditional Medicine Hospital for emergency aid.”

Hung, from HCM City, told Thanh Nien newspaper, “I, my wife and my son visited a Chinese clinic on Kinh Duong Vuong road. We saw a Chinese man who declared himself to be a doctor and an interpreter. After cursory checks-up, they introduced three medicines for 200,000, 180,000 and 160,000 dong per day. We chose the first kind and paid a total of 10 million dong ($500).”

“It is very strange that we have different diseases, but they sold the same medicine for all of us. We paid 200,000 dong ($10) a day and received several pills of different colors that had no name plus some medicinal concoctions.”

Hung explained that, after three days, they felt better, but later their symptoms became more serious. His wife’s breasts became swollen and she had to go to hospital. When they went to the clinic to claim their money back, the Chinese “doctor” agreed to return 50 percent.

Hoang Anh from HCM City was diagnosed with sinusitis at a Chinese clinic on Thanh Thai road in District 10. “When I said I felt painful while urinating, the doctor concluded that I had contracted kidney failure and told me to take medicine for 20 days. He asked me to deposit 500,000 dong and return the next day. But later that day I had read a newspaper article about cheating Chinese clinics, so I returned to reclaim my deposit, but they refused.”

Hoang Anh threatened to report the case to police, and then the clinic paid the deposit.

Unmasking tricks at Chinese clinics

Ha used to work for a Chinese clinic in District 10, HCM City. Ha explained that “They (the Chinese clinic) earned around 30 million dong ($1,800) daily from selling medicines. They opened the clinic just to sell medicines and they sold the same medicines to all patients. All Chinese traditional medicine clinics in HCM City have relations with each other. It is very easy to earn money in Vietnam, so they flocked here to open clinics and sell medicines without invoices.”

According to Ha, these clinics hired models and patients to advertise their services and medicines. Their medicines are produced from similar herbs like those at Vietnamese traditional medicine clinics, but they are sold at very high prices, at least 10 times higher. All Chinese clinics in HCM City buy medicines from the same clinic in District 6.

Ha disclosed how Chinese clinics expand. “After Vietnamese authorities license a Chinese clinic with several Chinese doctors, these people divide up to work with Vietnamese and open new clinics. All operate the same way: one Chinese man, a small room, and several female staff serving as interpreters, nurses and cashiers. After a cursory check-up, they ask patients to buy medicines for 30-40 days or ten days for poor patients. They sell medicines for at least 10 days, worth several million dong. At the clinic where I worked, they always knew beforehand whenever health inspectors would arrive.”

A senior Vietnamese traditional medicine doctor decided to play the role of a patient to expose some Chinese clinics. He noted that there are Chinese clinics in Hanoi, Da Nang, HCM City, Can Tho, etc. but the qualifications of their Chinese doctors are very poor. They only want to sell medicine. He warned that some Chinese clinics mixed Dexamethason in their medicine, which will make some symptoms disappear very quickly, but they will return after a short period of time.

HCM City health inspectors recently inspected some Chinese clinics and detected most clinics of the above-mentioned violations. These clinics were fined from 10-20 million dong.

The city currently has over 1500 traditional medicine clinics, but the local Department of Health doesn’t know how many Chinese doctors operate at these clinics. An official admitted that there are only a small number of Chinese doctors registered with the department. Many others have since come to Vietnam as tourists and practiced medicine illegally.

Local traditional medicine experts proposed to immediately close Chinese clinics where doctors don’t have a traditional medicine practice certificate. “The more authorities impose fines, the more they cheat patients to pay these fees,” an expert warned.

After newspapers reported the chaotic situation at Chinese traditional medicine clinics, the Ministry of Health stepped in and took measures to address the situation.

Second, a lot of people think that the prices of iPhone 4 will be high, without having any outstanding features.

Third, the design of iPhone 4 is described as “manly” and not really attractive to women. Besides, Apple is also not selling iPhone 3GS globally, which has created a short supply on the black market.

iPhone 3GS are not only scarce on the black market, but two telecom companies, VinaPhone and Viettel have also announced that the demand for iPhone 3GS has increased dramatically. Though the two companies imported an additional 5000 iPhone 3GS, retail shops have asked for even more.

The companies are taking necessary steps for the product launch, including setting up prices and associated service packages.

The prices of iPhone 4 have not been revealed, but telecom companies say they will not be much higher than iPhone 3 and will be lower than products made available on the market by travelers to Vietnam.

Vietnam’s mooncakes ‘grease wheels of commerce’

Vietnam’s appetite for mooncakes is rising as adults use the annual treats, traditionally enjoyed by children, to grease the wheels of commerce.

Mooncakes are a sweet, round delicacy given to youngsters and offered to ancestors during Vietnam’s Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on Wednesday.

But in Vietnam’s rapidly developing economy they have taken on increased importance for grown-ups who use gifts of mooncakes to build business relationships.

Most of the cakes sell for about one dollar but others, sometimes elaborately packaged and made with expensive ingredients like birds nest or crayfish, can retail for almost VND2 million (US$101).

That is almost three times the official minimum monthly wage for civil servants.

“Those are for the rich, and for bosses,” Nguyen Thi Hoai, 42, who makes her living collecting used paper products, said outside one of the many temporary mooncake shops which have opened around Hanoi.

High-priced mooncakes “are for someone who wants to show off,” a housewife who gave her name only as Huong said as she passed a shop where cakes sold for between VND200,000 and 700,000.

One boxed gift contained eight small mooncakes, their traditional accompaniment of tea, and the modern twist of a bottle of wine – all for VND1.5 million.

Tran Hung Lam, 38, a motorcycle taxi driver, said he saw some people carry out five or even 10 big boxes of high-end cakes from a shop near his parking spot.

“Not worth the money,” Lam declared.

For many people, though, they are.

One woman who works for a large private firm said mooncakes are a way to thank clients, business contacts and bosses for their support.

The cakes are a way to “expand relations,” added the woman who declined to be named. She said her company bought its mooncakes from a luxury hotel, not an ordinary mooncake shop.

The Vietnam News on Friday quoted Nguyen Xuan Luan, deputy director of a major national bakery firm, as saying orders of its luxury Golden Moon cakes were up 20 percent on last year.

Large companies order the cakes to present to staff “and partners”, said Luan, of the Kinh Do company.

Thang Long-Hanoi brand mooncakes had also sold well, even at VND1.8 million for a box of four, he was quoted as saying.

More down-to-earth cakes, which can look something like an Australian meat pie, often contain a green-bean paste and come in a cheap plastic wrapper.

They are commonly given to teachers during the festival, which originated as a way to mark the end of harvest and is also celebrated by Chinese communities around Asia.

Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most important celebrations in Vietnam’s Chinese-influenced culture, is a time for children to receive toys and is marked with colorful lanterns and lion dances as well as mooncakes.

“It is traditional that one offers a box of these special cakes to someone that you want to please or owe a favor, like your landlord or the local police,” said a supplement to the Vietnam Economic Times.

Gift-giving is part of the culture in Vietnam, but the country is also rated as one of the world’s most corrupt.

Everyone from traffic police to health workers and teachers are widely alleged to receive payoffs.

Gift-giving is not necessarily corruption but could be, said Matthieu Salomon, international senior adviser to Towards Transparency, a local non-governmental organization acting as the “national contact” point for Transparency International, the German-based global anti-corruption network.

“It depends on the value of the present,” said Salomon, whose group is not a chapter of Transparency International.

“It also depends on how people perceive the present, especially whether they feel obliged to offer it and whether people who receive it think they have to give something in exchange.”

Nguyen Thi Tham, 39, who earns about VND60,000 a day, said she did not know whether giving cakes constitutes bribery.

“But Mid-Autumn Festival is the time to show gratitude to certain people,” she said.

Sex work an escape from poverty, drudgery

Prostitution is illegal and deemed a “social evil” in Vietnam, but this has not been an inhibiting factor in its exponential growth over the last few decades.

Official pronouncements as well as assessments by other agencies of this growing “problem” stick to the conventional rationale of women forced into the profession by poverty or by criminals running the flesh trade.

However, Kimberly Kay Hoang, a PhD sociology candidate at the University of California, says such assumptions do not stand up to close scrutiny. In fact, she says, the illegal sex industry in Vietnam offers little evidence of trafficking or coercion.

“Vietnam has been marked as a Tier 2 country by the United States State Department and people from all around the world have been concerned with ‘saving’ Vietnamese women from being trafficked,” she told Thanh Nien Weekly via email.

Tier 2 refers to the degree of compliance with minimum standards set by the Trafficking Victims Protection Act enacted by the US government in 2000.

In June, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga rejected the US Department of State’s findings that the human trafficking situation had worsened in Vietnam, saying they “do not rightly reflect the real situation.”

Hoang said she agrees with the spokeswoman.

“I think that the media has over-sensationalized this idea of ‘forced’ sex workers. In 2006-2007 NGOs, journalists, and academics alike came to Vietnam looking to ‘save’ women, myself included. However, when most of us got deep into the thick of our research we were shocked to find that in Vietnam (not across borders) very few women were forced,” she said.

In analyzing why many Vietnamese women choose to be a sex worker despite its illegality in the country, Hoang said, “I think that people need to pay more attention to corporations and factories who are not paying their workers livable wages. Many of the women in my project started out as factory workers making VND700,000 (US$36) to VND1 million ($51) and according to them, the ‘smart ones’ are the ones who got out of the factories and are actually working in places where they can ‘turn their lives around’,” she said.

In a paper titled “Economies of Emotion, Familiarity Fantasy and Desire: Emotional Labor in Ho Chi Minh City’s Sex Industry” published in the Sexualities Journal this April, Kimberly found that sex work was an “emotional labor” and that the industry has experienced a shift in major clientele following the recent economic crisis.

More than sex

The paper finds that the Vietnamese sex industry is highly stratified and economic difficulties are not the only reason why people enter sex work.

“I think that we should recognize that sex work involves more than sex. It is an intimate relationship with porous boundaries where women sometimes marry, migrate, and fall in and out of love,” Kimberly said.

“Women in the lower end sector certainly entered the sex industry for economic reasons. However, women in the highest paying sector actually came from wealthy families by local standards. In the mid-tier sector, women served as tour guides and provided men with what I call ‘expressive emotional’ labor, making these men feel loved,” she said.

Hoang spoke with 21-year-old Kim Ly who frequented high-end bars in five star hotels and was dating two Viet kieu men from the US. Ly, who was from a relatively well-to-do family, said she got more out of her clients by engaging in a form of emotional labor by showing concern for the latter’s well-being.

Hoang also quotes Thanh, an overseas Vietnamese man [or Viet kieu] in the study who works as a computer technician in Paris, as saying all the women at a District 1 bar he was at were “working” and that “you just have to put out the right price.”

Thanh bought a bottle of Remy, a Cognac bottle that costs about $100, and invited some women to drink, including 24-year-old Hoai. Thanh took a liking to Hoai and they began to dance seductively with each other. At the end of the night they exchanged numbers and over the course of two weeks, the two spent time with each other on dates in cafes, restaurants, and bars.

“I’m only here for two weeks and it’s nice to have someone beautiful to be with here. I bought her jewelry, clothes and give her money to spend while we are together.”

“These girls are expensive because they are young, pretty, and other guys want them… I knew if I didn’t give her enough money she would move on to another guy. I don’t want to go for those ugly girls that you see with old white guys,” he said.

As a high-end client, Viet kieu men like Thanh come to Vietnam to consume more than just sex, Hoang finds. These men are purchasing the services of high-end sex workers who are young, beautiful, relatively well off, and desired by other men, and who, most importantly, make them feel desired.

Hoang reports that Tram, another sex worker, continues to work in the sex industry even after she has secured herself a foreign husband, because her socioeconomic position was not secure and she needed to ensure that she could send money to her family, her former husband and their children.

“It’s not that I don’t love William [her husband]. It is just a different kind of love; the kind of love where you grow to love the person because they have done so much for you. There is no guarantee that William will be my ticket out of Vietnam. The embassy does a lot of investigations into fake marriages and they could easily deem my marriage as a fake one since I am a divorcee. So, I need to have back-up plans.”

Changing clientele

Viet kieu are no longer major clients of the high-end sector due to the impacts of the global economic crisis that hit many other countries harder than Vietnam.

“While the rest of the world has been suffering through a major economic crisis, Vietnam’s economy has experienced a 7 to 8 percent growth per year... Vietnam has received a lot more in foreign direct investments since it joined the WTO in 2006 and much of those investments are coming from Asia,” Kimberly said.

“As a country regionally positioned in Asia, Bill Hayton has argued that Vietnam is an emerging dragon. In this way the highest paying sector of the sex industry now caters to wealthy locals and Asian businessmen and not Viet kieus or Westerners,” she said.

Hayton, Vietnam correspondent for BBC News in 2006 to 2007, authored “Vietnam, Rising Dragon,” published in March this year.

In an article on the BBC News website, Kimberly said the change in major clientele happened around 2009 and the locals could spend an average of $15,000- $20,000 a month in expensive bars.

These bars have karaoke lounges like others but are advanced to a high-end level. Bartenders here are also sex workers who earn some $2,000 a month from tips and between $150 and $200 per night with their client, she wrote.

Thang, a 56-year-old local entrepreneur in Kimberly’s story, said: “The Viet kieu era is over.” Local men now drive Bentley cars costing half a million dollars, he noted, adding, “Once Vietnamese men play,” other Asian men or Viet kieu cannot match them.

VietNamNet Bridge – Many Vietnamese individuals and institutions have assumed big travel firms’ names to cheat foreign tourists. Meanwhile, a real travel company is considering suing these impostors in court

Sabine Lorenz and Karin Hildegard Dusold, two German tourists, heard about the beauty of Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay from relatives and decided to make a trip to Vietnam. They booked a tour to visit with the five-star Paradise Cruise in August on http://www.halongparadisecruise.com/. However, after the tourists made their payments, they received a notice that the five-star Paradise Cruise ran out of rooms and they were asked to travel with another cruise service.

After that, they realized that a company located at No 68 Hang Bo Street, Hanoi had assumed Paradise Cruise’s name and cheated the two German tourists.

Another traveler, French Christian Prestaut, thought that he successfully booked a tour with Paradise Cruise for a trip to Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. He paid a deposit worth $1500 through http://www.halongparadise-cruises.com/ (total expenses for the trip were $4986). However, after depositing the payment, the traveler realized that a man named Tony Bui created the false website. Mr. Bui lives at Room 514, F4, Trung Hoa Residential Quarter in Cau Giay District, Hanoi.

Nguyen Cao Son, Marketing and Sales Director for Tuan Chau Paradise Cruise, said that his company has received many complaints from clients. The clients said they paid for five-star cruise services, but they were then forced to travel with low-quality cruises.

“After learning about the facts, we realized that we are also victims. Some companies and individuals have assumed our names to cheat clients,” Son said.

According to Son, the address of his company’s website is www.paradisecruises.org and the company has a certificate on trademark registration from the National Office of Intellectual Property (NOIP). However, to date, at lease eight websites with similar names have been created, creating misunderstandings for travelers. A lot of foreign travelers book tours on these false websites, which explains why they receive such low-quality service.

“We believe that individuals and institutions deliberately create misunderstanding, because on the false websites, they provide information similar to the information on our official website, while changing the information about physical addresses to contact and emails to book seats,” Son said.

He went on to say that his company is considering bringing this case to court in order to protect the Vietnamese tourism industry’s image in the eyes of international tourists.

While talking to Dau tu newspaper, Lawyer Nguyen Hoan Thanh from Thanh and Associates Law Office, said that there are clear signs of intellectual property law violations, but it would be not easy to remove the addresses and domains of the websites that falsify Paradise Cruises’ name.

“If Paradise Cruises can point to the institutions and individuals who deliberately violated the laws, the company can take legal proceedings against these individuals and institutions and sue for damages,” Thanh said.

According to Thanh, if the domain of the websites is “ .vn”, the company will be able to sue the individuals and institutions and ask to remove the websites. However, if the domains are “.com” or “ .org,” the company will have to ask for the removal through ICANN, the institution that supervises domain names. The institution will make a decision on whether to stop the operation of domains that create such great misunderstandings.

Meanwhile, analysts have called on institutions and relevant agencies to take the necessary actions to stop the falsification of tourism websites, saying that this is one of the reasons to explain why many foreign tourists do not intend to return to Vietnam after their first trip.

Despite brutal murder, Vietnam continues to bleed wives

Pham Thi Ngoc Dat, 19, and four pretty young women sat chatting happily about their bright futures on a recent afternoon.

The girls had gathered at a street-side café near the South Korean Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, waiting in eager anticipation.

Every one present had married a Korean husband in recent months. As they talked, they discussed plans to move to the prosperous peninsula as their visa applications had gone through.

“I am very excited to move there,” said 21-year-old Ta Thanh Tu, who wed a 40-year-old Korean man six months ago.

Tu said the brutal July murder of a Vietnamese bride by her crazed South Korean husband did not worry her at all.

“My husband speaks little Vietnamese and my Korean is nonexistent,” Tu said. “That’s my biggest worry.”

Dat and Tu will join a growing flock of Vietnamese brides heading for South Korea.

As concerns mount about dashed hopes and violent clashes, South Korea is taking steps to reform the matchmaking process and experts have called on Vietnam to do the same.

Some 38,000 Vietnamese women flocked to South Korea from 2004 to 2009, according to the National Statistical Office in Korea, which recorded 7,249 such marriages last year alone.

Official figures from the Korean Justice Ministry show that around another 2,300 Vietnamese wives have migrated to South Korea during the first half of this year.

Starting this November, Koreans hoping to wed foreigners will have to take educational courses about international marriages, and those who fail to attend will have visas denied to their brides, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family said in late July.

The move came in response to the brutal murder of a 20-year-old Vietnamese bride by her schizophrenic husband – eight days after her arrival in the country. The murder sparked public outrage and growing uneasiness about the export of Vietnamese brides.

“We promise to set up measures to prevent such an incident from occurring again,” the Korean Ministry of Gender Equality and Family said in a press release issued at the time.

However, experts argue that these classes will not suffice in tackling the problem, given the continued demand for Vietnamese wives among Korean men.

The tragedies of Vietnamese wives stemmed chiefly from the lack of background information – mental health records, criminal background checks, etc. – leading to a breakdown in these marriages, said Kang Sung Hea of the Emergency Support Center for Migrant Woman for Migrant Women in South Korea.

Professor Lee Hye-Kyung of Pai Chai University in South Korea said that the Vietnamese government should also do its best to furnish would-be wives with enough information before they get married.

It is the responsibility of the two governments to protect its people from false promises, said Lee, who is also the President of Korea International Migration Association.

Under current Vietnamese laws, marriage brokerage for profit is illegal.

“We change something here and you change something there. Some good will come out of it,” Prof. Lee said. “I’m hopeful.”

Phan Thiet has another five-star hotel on coastline

The five-star Sea Links Beach Hotel has started operations in Phan Thiet City, home to the resort town of Mui Ne, and plans to hold a soft opening ceremony in the middle of October 2010.

The hotel is part of Sea Links City, a complex of luxury properties owned by the Rang Dong Group including Sea Links Golf & Country Club, and golf course villas.

It is the first five-star beach hotel in Mui Ne, offering a magnificent view of the cape. Standing on top of a hill, the hotel offers a panorama of the sand dunes and the ocean in the distance, which is blue all year round since Phan Thiet has more than 300 sunny days a year.

The top floor is for reception and the lounge. Under it are the five levels that include 188 rooms, all facing the ocean to provide a panoramic sea view. The rooms have floor-to-ceiling glass windows so that guests can see an ocean view with bobbing boats, even when they relax in the bathtub.

Down the hill are four swimming pools, where guests can take a closer look at the 18-hole Sea Links golf course.

Phan Thiet is about 200 kilometers northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. According to the hotel’s management, chauffeur service can be arranged to pick guests up from Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport to Sea Links City.

VietNamNet Bridge – The dollar deposit interest rate has climbed to 5.5 percent per annum, while the gold interest rate has surged to two percent per annum. Gold continuously jumps to new heights, while the stock market remains gloomy. Which investment channels should people choose?

Dollar deposit interest rates have increased to 5.5 percent from four percent per annum seen one month ago, before the decision on devaluing the Vietnam dong by 2.1 percent was made. At the same time, the gold price has experienced its highest increases in just a week. As a result, gold deposit interest rates offered by Asia Commercial Bank (ACB), Sacombank and Seabank have climbed from one to two percent.

Why are these rates rising? Securities investors believe it is because banks are hurrying to mobilise capital to meet requirements stipulated in Circular 13 on the required capital adequacy ratio.

The Circular, which will take effect on October 1, stipulates that commercial banks can lend no more than 80 percent of the capital they can mobilise. Meanwhile, at many commercial banks, the ratio has exceeded 90 percent. The circular poses many difficulties for banks’ operation; therefore, banks have proposed that the central bank amend the circular.

Dr. Cao Sy Kiem, former Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), remarked: “The sharp dollar deposit interest rate increases will not last for too long, because banks must consider rates in harmony with dong and other currencies interest rates.”

A deputy general director at a big bank, shared the same view, saying that the current increases will be a “short wave.” Banks now hope that SBV will amend some regulations of Circular 13.

“Any changes to the circular that help ease difficulties for banks will lead to lower interest rates. Gold deposit interest rates will be eased first, then dollar interest rates,” he explained.

At present, dong interest rates are hovering around 10.6-11.2 percent per annum. However, the general director predicted that actual interest rates may even be higher soon, when commercial banks offer special promotions.

Since banks dare not raise rates officially, as the Government and SBV have called on them to ease interest rates, they must offer preferences to depositors, which makes actual interest rates higher than quoted. Banks now lend money at 14.5 percent per annum to fund production projects, while interest rates on consumer loans run about 16.5 percent per annum.

Another financial analyst agreed that banks may have to raise dong interest rates, because the currently high dollar interest rates will prompt people to withdraw dong to sell for dollars, which they will then deposit. In this case, a dong shortage may occur.

The gold price on September 21 climbed to 30.5 million dong per tael. Sacombank-SBJ reported on that day that “The demand for purchasing gold continues to rise slightly on the first day of the week. However, they are small buyers who want to hoard gold or must buy gold to pay debts. The market remains lackluster, because people and investors have become cautious with the new price records.”

According to Nguyen Thi Cuc, Deputy General Director of Phu Nhuan Jewellery Company (PNJ), choosing gold investment must be done only by investors who understand technical analyses and factors that may affect price performance.

“It is necessary to put eggs into different baskets, or, in other words, make different small investment deals. If you have 10 dong, you should use three dong to purchase gold, while the remaining seven should go elsewhere,” Cuc stated.

Nguyen Thanh Truc, General Director of Agribank’s Jewelry Company, remarked that gold prices are now at very high levels. Gold keepers should gradually sell gold if they purchased when prices were low. Now is not the right time to buy gold to store.

Additionally, Kiem advised: “At this moment, it would be safest to buy dollars, because the stock market’s index is now below 500 points and it will be hard to bounce back. I would not choose gold, because prices are overly high.”

Vietnam Airlines cuts international tickets by 85 percent

The national carrier Vietnam Airlines has announced an up to 85 percent discount on nearly 90,000 international flight tickets bought between September 30 and October 10.

Passengers planning to take off between October 15 and December 31 and between April 1 and May 31 can buy the discounted tickets at Vietnam Airlines agencies nationwide or via its website www.vietnamairlines.com.

The tickets will also be available at the International Tourism Exhibition between September 30 and October 2 organized at Saigon Seminar and Exhibition Center at 799 Nguyen Van Linh Street.

Under the program, round trip tickets to Southeast Asian countries will be discounted 85 percent, to Laos and Cambodia 74 percent, to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan 80 percent, to Japan and South Korea 82 percent, Australia 50 percent and European countries such as France, Germany, Russia 40 precent.

But the program will not be applied on flights around April 30 – the country’s reunification day and May 1 – Labor Day, which is the travel prime time as people have days off.

Radiology violations raise big concerns

Safety violations at health clinics in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh have raised concerns among local experts.

Recent inspections conducted by the Ministry of Sciences and Technology in Hanoi found that eight out of 62 radiology clinics visited were using substandard and unlicensed machines, and lacked safety technicians.

The violators, all of which were detected at health clinics with X-ray machines, were fined a total of VND51.5 million (US$2,647).

The same situation was reported in Ho Chi Minh City, where 14 out of 35 inspected clinics were fined VND77 million ($3,958) in total also for violations in running X-ray machines.

Nguyen Hao Quang, Director of the Ministry’s Center for Nuclear Radiation Technical Support, said the health industry has yet to take proper care in its use of radioactive materials.

If health clinics keep running X-ray machines improperly, patients will suffer the consequences, according to Quang.

Substandard X-ray machines may give incorrect results and could pose risks of other diseases, he said.

Recent statistics showed that the rate of population having cancers is on the rise, which Quang attributed to the improper use of X-ray machines.

Another Health Ministroy official said, on the condition of anonymity, that these bad practices also posed risks the technicians who constantly come in contact with the radioactive materials --which can cause cancer and death.

Long lines of people waiting to buy the phone gathered in front of Vinaphone and Viettel stores in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City at around 7 a.m. As there were not enough phones to sell, many customers went home empty-handed and angry, VnExpress said.

Pham Ngoc Tu, Vinaphone marketing manager, said that demand was much higher than expected. He said his company will import another 300 phones next week.

The iPhone 4 was launched in the US in June. Although the smartphone has been available at phone shops around the country for months, it was only distributed officially in Vietnam via Vinaphone and Viettel for the first time this week.

Official prices are set at VND13.4 million for the 16 gigabyte version and VND15.6 million for the 32 GB model. Prices at these official outlets are VND2-3 million lower than prices at small-scale phone shops.

Vinaphone and Viettel began selling the previous versions 3G and 3GS of the iPhone in March.

VietNamNet Bridge – Since the low travel season this year coincides with the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long- Hanoi, the aviation market is witnessing its biggest ever promotional campaign era.

Domestic and international airlines with air routes to Vietnam have kicked off the winter flight schedule, offering very attractive airfares.

Domestic flights’ airfares down by 50 percent

The national flag air carrier Vietnam Airlines has announced 50 percent airfare reductions for domestic flights, including the flights on Hanoi - Vinh, HCM City/Phu Quoc Island – Can Tho/Rach Gia, HCM City – Nha Trang/Da Lat, Hanoi/HCM City – Da Nang, Hue, Tam Ky, Da Nang – Da Lat, Hanoi – HCM City/Buon Ma Thuot/Da Lat/Nha Trang/Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa/Can Tho, HCM City – Vinh/Hai Phong/Dong Hoi. The airfares on the air routes will be between 400,000 and 800,000 dong.

The cheap airfares will be applied to flights taken between September 15 and October 30, where 300,000 seats will be offered. An estimated 6999 cheap air tickets are selling everyday.

Besides super-cheap air tickets, on Friday, the budget airline Jetstar Pacific is opened its “Rong may man” (lucky dragon) program, under which 1000 air tickets will be sold at only 100,000 dong. From each week from the beginning of September to October 10, 200 cheap air tickets will be sold accidentally on the airline’s official website jetstar.com. Jetstar Pacific reported that it has sold 600 of the air tickets, while the other 400 will be sold in the next two weeks.

Passengers can also “hunt” for cheap tickets from Jetstar Pacific, at 350,000 dong per ticket for short distance flights, 600,000 dong for Hanoi – HCM City flights and 650,000 dong for HCM City – Vinh/Hai Phong flights.

Joining the market in the low season, Air Mekong, a market newcomer, has also launched 1000 cheap tickets on every route. The airline is offering air tickets for Hanoi – HCM City flights at 800,000 dong. It is expected that in the first period of operation, Air Mekong will provide 34 flights a day on eight domestic air routes. The airline will focus on short distance flights, mostly to Phu Quoc island.

It’s cheap to fly to US and Europe

On the occasion of the two important events, the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi and the annual International Tourism Exhibition to be held in HCM City, Vietnam Airlines is offering big discounts for international travelers.

Under the program, return tickets to Southeast Asian countries are selling at 950,000 dong (down by 85 percent). Meanwhile, the airfares to Indochina countries are 1.92 million dong, down by 74 percent, to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan 1.9 million dong ( -80 percent), to Japan, South Korea 5.8 million dong ( -82 percent), Australia 9.55 million dong (- 50 percent).

Vietnam Airlines also decided to lower the airfares on the air routes where it holds a large market share. For example, airfares for direct flights to France, Germany and Russia have dropped by 40 percent to 11.44 million dong per ticket per travel. The tickets will be applied for the flights to depart on October 15 – December 31, 2010 and April 1 – May 31, 2011.

TransViet, the booking agent for nearly 10 international airlines in Vietnam, has revealed that there are big discounts for tickets to fly to Poland and the US. LOT, the Polish air carrier, will begin providing direct flights on Warsaw – Hanoi with Boeing 767-300 from November 15. The lowest airfare will be $380 per return ticket. A lot of passengers have taken advantage of the promotion campaign to book tickets for the flights to depart from now until November 2011.

Not only attracting travelers from/to Eastern Europe, LOT also can attract a large amount of travelers from/to Western Europe thanks to very cheap airfares.

According to TransViet, the air route from Vietnam to the US has witnessed the two fold growth rate in the last time, since the economy has warmed up, while the procedures for obtaining visas to the US have been loosened. The United Airlines is offering return ticket at $800 for the flights from Hanoi to the western coast of the US, and $950 to the east coats. The flights will depart on September 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011.

Largest-ever parade in Vietnam on October 10

VietNamNet Bridge – Approximately 31,000 people will join the largest parade in the history of Vietnam that will take place in Hanoi on October 10 to celebrate the capital city’s 1000th birthday.

The National Steering Board for Thang Long-Hanoi’s 1000th Anniversary said at a press conference on September 28 that this parade has been in the making for several years.

The parade will start at 7:55am, October 10, at Ba Dinh Square, with a torchlight procession from the Ho Chi Minh Museum to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.

The flag-saluting ceremony will be held later, accompanied by the national anthem sang by all attendants and a 21 cannon salute.

After President Nguyen Minh Triet delivers a speech, a song about Hanoi will be performed by thousands of people.

The parade will come after that, led by ten helicopters carrying the Communist Party flag, the national flag and a banner “Celebrating Thang Long-Hanoi’s 1000th Anniversary” and 31,000 participants.

The army will contribute 12,000 people, divided into 15 groups while Hanoi will have 13 groups, totaling 19,000 people, including 1000 children.

The parade will go from Hung Vuong road to two directions: Nguyen Thai Hoc – Trang Thi and Nguyen Thai Hoc – Kim Ma.

People can stand along the road to see the parade or watch live on television and on 20 big screens along major roads in Hanoi.

To Van Dong, chief of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Office, confirmed this is the largest-ever parade in Vietnam’s history.

The rehearsals will be held on October 2 and 7.

For those who may not understand Vietnamese, let me write a short summary about it. She has $500 now and needs another $500 from me. She wants to send money back to her sick mother who is in hospital now in Vietnam. I gave an excuse, telling her that I will meet her at airport on her last day here and will give her but she wants it now.

Thang Long royal citadel opens for visitors

VietNamNet Bridge – Eight years since it was excavated, the royal citadel opened to the public the first time on October 2 at 18 Hoang Dieu, Hanoi.

The opening ceremony took place with a welcome speech by Do Hoai Nam, Director of the Vietnam Institute for Social Sciences. According to Nam, visitors would see outstanding parts of the Thang Long Royal Citadel and evidence of 1000 years as Vietnam’s capital city, through the dynasties of Dai La, Dinh, Le, Ly, Tran, Mac, Nguyen to the Ho Chi Minh age.

Tong Trung Tin, Director of the Vietnam Institute for Archaeology, explained that the organizing board chose more than 150 outstanding items to introduce. “Visitors will see layers of culture through vestiges of foundations, roads, wells, ponds, etc. All are typical examples that make the citadel a world cultural heritage site,” Tin stated.

However, Tin worried that large numbers of visitors may harm this site. “I recommend visitors to follow instructions to protect the relics. This is also a request of the World Heritage Committee,” he added.

Eight zones opened for public inside the Thang Long Royal Citadel:

Flagpole: A relic built in the Nguyen Dynasty in 1804.
Doan Mon: The major gate to the citadel, built in the Le Dynasty (15th century).
Hau Lau: Built in the early 20th century, this was home for the imperial maids.
The grounds of Kinh Thien palace where the Le kings held audiences. This palace was built on the ground of the Can Nguyen Palace of the Ly Dynasty and Thien An palace of the Ly and Tran eras.
Bac Mon: The northern gate of the Hanoi citadel in the Nguyen dynasty.
House D67 and trench D67, both built in 1967 as offices for General Vo Nguyen Giap and General Van Tien Dung.
The exhibition room with 150 outstanding items excavated in the Thang Long Royal Citadel and photos and mock-ups of the citadel.
House N32 exhibits more than 700 objects excavated in the Thang Long Royal citadel, including construction materials, reliefs, and daily instruments from the Dai La to Ly, Tran, Le dynasties.

The citadel will open until November 2, from 8am to 12pm and 1pm to 5pm. The 18 Hoang Dieu relic will open form October 2 to 11 and October 14 to November 2. From October 24 to November 2, the relic will open only on Wednesday and Sunday. The relic will close as of November 3 for preservation and research.

Prostitutes getting younger

VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam has more than 30,000 prostitutes, according to latest reports.

Most notably, the prostitutes are getting younger. Up to 42 percent of them age from 18 to 25, 15.3 percent from 16-18 years old and 35 percent from 25 to 35 years old.

According to a conference reviewing efforts to combat prostitution between 2006 and 2010 on September 28, police have detected over 4,200 cases, arresting nearly 18,000 prostitutes, pimps and madams during this period.

As many as 2,812 cases and 3,682 defendants were brought to court, while 1,407 cases were fined. More than 5000 prostitutes were sent to rehabilitation centres.

Police have discovered many rings that sell Vietnamese women to Macau, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Cambodia plus some high-class prostitution rings in HCM City.

The head of the Agency for Combating Social Evils, Nguyen Van Minh, commented that prostitution via Internet and mobile phone has boomed. Many websites advertising prostitution have also appeared.

VietNamNet Bridge – Taking advantage of the State’s policy on the tax payment grace period, nearly 1000 enterprises have run away, leaving hundreds of billions of dong in unpaid tax behind them. Customs agencies now must spend time and energy to track them down.

In HCM City, tax evasion and tax fraud has been occurring regularly. The trick usually used is to apply for a tax grace period and import products in big quantities at the same time. After that, just before the payment deadlines (15, 30 days or nine months after customs clearance), the enterprises disappear, leaving debts worth several billion dong.

At Cat Lai port’s customs agency in HCM City, inspectors and customs officials on September 18 discovered a high number of cases like this. One typical example is Tan Hai Trieu Trade and Service Company. From November 1, 2002 to December 31, 2002, the company imported 12 consignments of car inner tubes and made 12 customs declarations under which they would have to pay nearly two billion dong in tax. However, to date, the firm has not paid.

After lengthy exertions, inspectors found the director of the company. Nguyen Van Luom, Director of Tan Hai Trieu Company, is actually a construction worker, who is illiterate and does not know anything about doing business.

Luom, who was registered as the director, explained that, in September 2002, a relative named Pham Van Thiet asked for his identification card and ho khau (permanent residential book) to set up Tan Hai Trieu Company. Thiet hired Luom to work as director and paid Luom 1.5 million dong a month.

After the company was established, Thiet kept the seal, while Luom signed documents as director. “I do not know anything about imports of machines and equipment,” Luom admitted.

Customs agencies have also found that Thong Thai Company, based in HCM City, imported six consignments on April 3, 2003 – April 30, 2003 and was charged 444 million dong in tax. It has yet to submit a single dong.

To the astonishment of inspectors, they discovered that the director of Thong Thai Company is Nguyen Van Thiet, the real owner of Tan Hai Trieu.

With the support of the police, tax inspectors met Thiet. He admitted that he was the main person running Tan Hai Trieu Company.

According to customs agencies, by December 2009, nearly 1000 enterprises had evaded taxes, totaling three trillion dong. Of this amount, 2500 billion dong is classified as irrecoverable.

The policy of delayed tax payment has allowed businesses to evade taxes. Enterprises import products in big quantities and then abandon the addresses where they registered their business. If counting taxes and fines for late payment, the two aforementioned companies alone, according to Cat Lai Customs Agency owe over four billion dong.

Nguyen Van Han, a senior official from Cat Lai Customs Agency, reported that the agency sent documents to Tan Hai Trieu and Thong Thai Companies many times, asking for them to pay tax, but they have not received a reply. The customs agency has put their tax codes onto a ‘black list’, but they cannot find out if the tax evaders are the real owners of other companies.

According to Nguyen Thi Hoa, Director of Cat Lai Customs Agency, the lack of regulations allowing heavy fines for violators and their shortage of staff prevent customs agencies from efficiently deterring tax evasion.

Sometime I think if i go pub alone, i spent $30. This make me wanna go KTV with a company of Brothers, where damage is almost the same :p

No, I dun like to go these area too. KTV expenses high for these 2 at SH. Pebbles too crowded. I wan to learn TV & KC from u, but dun wan to pay fee, so if we hv common places to go, I sure will follow u. Those not so popular places may hv more MILF than SYT, which is not within your category :( Maybe u follow me to my KTV session, then u will experience another type of ktv chionging style, low budget one :p

Attesting to the growing popularity of these sports and of Da Lat as an adventure-sports destination are nearly 10 service providers at the end of the sloping Truong Cong Dinh Street. These establishments have professional trainers and instructors, some trained abroad.

For the young and strong at heart, riding elephants, biking up Lang Biang Mountain or climbing down cliffs of the Prenn Falls and overnight stays in the forest are “relaxing” activities.

Among the most adventurous activities on offer is an exploration of the seven-storied Datanla Falls.

On the third floor of the fall is a cliff 20 meters tall that stands almost upright. Here, rubber dinghies wait. Trainers distribute lifejackets and instructions on rowing it through rough waters and tell you not to panic even when the boat capsizes.

This adventure takes about three hours, during which a seven-kilometer stretch of the river and eleven rocky waterfalls are navigated. After a well-deserved rest, there is another sixty-minute walk through forests to reach National Highway No. 20 before heading back to downtown Da Lat.

The rowing journey costs US$60 a person.

Tuan recalled that a US tourist named Justin had emailed him after returning home, saying he keeps missing the adventure that was “full of joy and excitement.”

HOW TO GET THERE
================

By motorbike: Take National Highway 1A from Ho Chi Minh City. Turn to National Highway No. 20 at Dau Giay T-junction. Da Lat is 306 kilometers from HCMC.

By bus or car: From the Mien Dong Bus Station in HCMC’s Binh Thanh District. It takes 7-8 hours and costs around VND100,000 (US$5.14) a ticket.
